Middle School Matters – May 06, 2019

General Announcements

Spring Concert 5-8 is May 09: May 09 at ACS, 7:00pm (6:30pm arrival) for all students grades 5-8. 56 should wear the green retreat shirts dark pants/skirts/capris, and 78 should wear black and white concert attire.

Concert begins in the South Gym - 56 choir, then 78 choir. Then we split - - bands remain in the South Gym, orchestras will perform in the Commons. We will leave from our separate venues. We have a lot of music to play and sing and look forward to many genres of music.

Fifth Grade:

Chemistry Field Trip: Please fill out this form to give your child permission to attend our chemistry field trip to Calvin College on the afternoon of Thu May 16. We will leave school at 12:00 and return at 2:00. No hot lunch will be available for 5th grade on this day due to our travel time.

Spring Camp: Will be held at Camp Tall Turf May 22-24.

Reproductive Education: Reproductive Education will take place May 29-31.


Band/Choir: Spring concert is May 09 - see note above! We cannot wait to play/sing for you, we have a lot of music, it’s hard to choose which ones to do! Ask for a pre-concert at home!

Bible: We wrote and illustrated creation psalms last week. As the year wraps up, we will spend some time reflecting on our school theme once again as well as how God has met us and taught us and grown us this year and throughout our lives.

History: We will begin our next unit on Ancient Rome!

Language Arts: Our normal class schedule has been interrupted with preparation for the Grandfriends’ Day chapel and upcoming spring concert. When we do meet together, we continue to work on our World Fair newspaper. Also, please note that students will take the MAP reading and L.A. tests at various times in the next few weeks.

Math: We started Chapter 12 Geometry! This week we took a close look at triangles and quadrilaterals.

Orchestra: Middle School Spring Orchestras/ Choirs and band will perform on Thursday, May 09. Orchestra players arrive at 6:30PM to tune in the orch room! Don’t be late for tuning. We can’t wait to play for you. Be sure to have all instruments at school on Tuesday and Thursday for large rehearsals.

PE: We will wrap up our unit on badminton. Please be sure that students come to class with appropriate shoes and clothes to be active in.

Science: Students have created some very cool plants and pollinators this week! Their projects are due on Tue, May 07. The instructions are posted on our google classroom page (reminder: they can log in with their normal school ID + @adachristian.org) if they need to finish up over the long weekend.

Social Studies: Using primary and secondary sources, students will continue to explore the events of the Revolutionary War.

Sixth Grade:

Chicken Checker & Got Yolk: Mr. Hoo has assigned each family to chicken chores for 1 weekend between now and the end of the school year. This includes cleaning the coop, feeding the chickens and picking up eggs. Please look  at which weekend you have been assigned to be sure you are available. If you are not, please work with another family to make a switch. Questions? Talk to Mr. Hoo. We are counting on you!

Devotion Sign-up: FIVE spots left. Time is running out and we would love for you to consider signing up here to lead devotions for the  6th Graders on a Thursday (8:00-8:10am) this school year. The students love to have parents and guests come to share a story, song, verse, prayer or devotional with us.

Bible: We’ve been focusing on creation Psalms this week and are writing some of our own, praising God for his amazing creation which is bursting to life at this time of year!

Choir: All students are singing on May 09 at the Spring Concert and should plan to wear retreat shirts and dark or khaki pants/capris/skirts.

History: We will have our Ancient Greece Test on Wednesday. Students have been busy finding ways to study and review in class. Here is their study guide!

Science: We’re putting together all the many physical science concepts we’ve been studying to see how they fit with weather and climate on Earth. We’re specifically focusing on the heating of Earth’s surface and atmosphere this week.

Seventh Grade:

Rollerblading Club: Do you remember the 1990’s? Wasn’t rollerblading fun? Wouldn’t you love for your kids to experience that fun as well? Now they can. Next Tues, Apr 30, Mr. Musch and Mrs. Quist (with the possibility of other teachers) will be Skating to Scoopers! If your child is interested, please fill out this google form to grant permission for your child to join us. We will leave at the end of school and plan to return around 4:15. Please send your child with skates, any protective gear you require your child to wear, and money for the ice cream.


Algebra: We have two more chapters left! Rational expressions and equations is what we are working on now.

Bible: Everyone was able to finish their MAP Language tests in Bible - wonderful! Now we can get back to serving! Students will be working on a music-related assignment over the longer weekend: what do songs and scripture have to say about service? On Tuesday, we will be hearing from Ms. Leah about stewardship of the earth, what good work is, and what led her to our involvement with the OE program at our school.

Choir: All students are singing on May 09 at the Spring Concert and should plan to wear black/white to the concert.

Language Arts: We are going full-tilt ProCon this coming week after we take the MAP Reading Test on Monday and finish on Tuesday. Students are now very comfortable with bibliographies and citations, so we are moving on to the finer touches: introductory and concluding paragraphs.

Orchestra: Our Middle School Spring concert is Thursday, May 09 and we can’t wait to play some of our pieces for you. Remember to arrive at 6:30pm to tune and remember concert dress.

Science: We have figured out how various types of sedimentary rocks have formed- we are now looking into igneous.

Eighth Grade:

Bible: Plumb-Bobs continue! Students are getting ready to share their speeches while they continue to learn about and perfect their calligraphy.

Geometry: We are starting our final chapter of the year, arcs and circles. 

Language Arts: Now that the busy-ness of GrandFriends week is over, the 8th graders will be solely focused on our final novel study, preparing for our exam, revising some BOM essays and officially closing Diary of Anne Frank. The Quest for that unit will be Monday, May 13.

Orchestra: All string groups will perform for Grand Friend’s Day, May 03 and also for Spring Concert, May 9. Black/white concert dress is required.

PE: We will wrap up our unit on badminton. Please be sure that students come to class with appropriate shoes and clothes to be active in.

Science: We have been talking about genetics and how we look the way we do. We will continue working on punnett squares and pedigrees, adding in some cell division next week.
