Middle School Matters - May 06, 2016

General Announcements:

Middle School Picnic on Friday, May 20 and Grillers Needed! - If you did not order the Middle School Picnic via the hot lunch online system, you may still order it via this order form if you send it to school by Wed May 11. Info and menu are on the form. Yum! We could use some help! Do you like to grill? We need some griller parents to grill up burgers on May 20 - please email Mrs. Van Noord if you are willing to be our grill-meister! ()

Fifth Grade:

Chemistry Demo at Calvin: On Tuesday, May 17, the 5th grade will be heading to Calvin College to watch a chemistry demonstration put on by Prof. Larry Louters and his assistants. Permission slips will go home next week.


Art: We continue to work on coloring in our Wayne Thiebald inspired cupcake compositions with chalk pastels.

Band: Great job for GF Day! Spring Concert Monday, May 23 at 7:00pm. We have full band Mon/Tues/Thurs until May 23, except when we are gone to camp.

Bible: The Jesus Projects are all collected, and we are poring over all of the thoughts shared here. We will share them with our grand friends tomorrow.

Math: Estimating and measuring units of weight. We also created and used formulas on Google Spreadsheets to balance our checkbooks in LIFE.

PE: We will continue our lacrosse unit. Students should be prepared to go outside!

Science: Chemistry and experiments continue.

Social Studies: 20th century American life and history.

Spanish: 5th graders are really doing well with the alphabet and phonetics. They will have a short quiz later next week or early the following, depending on which class they are in.

Sixth Grade:

WEDNESDAY, MAY 11 – The 6th graders are heading to Fallasburg Park for the day! Small group activities include prayer and team challenges. What to bring/wear:

  • Sack lunch--fully disposable container
  • Clothing for the weather--we will be outside for much of the day, so sunscreen? rainjacket? sweatshirt?
  • "Movement oriented clothing"--including tennis shoes, that is not your favorite stuff, as it could get messy
  • We will provide water and a snack (fruit and a nut and dairy free item)

Art: In the next art class students will begin glazing their ceramic effigy bowls. Have a conversation with you student about how to glaze and what colors they are think about using. Check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignments due dates and project deadlines.

Band: Great Job for GF Day! Spring Concert Monday, May 23 at 7:00pm.

Bible:  Music videos should be uploaded to Google Drive and shared with Mrs. DeWeerd before school on Tuesday. Bible memory verse due on Thursday because of our field trip on Wednesday. Continuing our study of the book of Exodus.

History: We will be finishing Lesson 5 this coming week on Ancient Rome, and have a final test early next week.  Over the long weekend, make sure all of Lesson 4 is complete.

Language Arts: Hopefully, students are practicing their speeches at home. If they have not given speeches yet in class, students will give them on Tuesday. We will also take the LA portion of the DEA next week.

Math: Statistics, measures of center, and measures of variability will be our focus.

PE: We will continue our lacrosse unit. Students should be prepared to go outside!

Science: We’ve been thinking and learning about how our planet and atmosphere are heated. What a perfect system God has created to keep everything in balance. He is taking care of us! Our next topic of study is water in the air.

Spanish:  TEST coming up. 6D on Tuesday, May 10; 6K on Thursday, May 12. This test covers family, but also possessive pronouns, pets, putting together complete sentences, and Cinco de mayo cultural notes. Students worked on a practice test in class Thursday.

Seventh Grade:

Art: The 7th grades continues work on their bird drawings using a variety of marks making techniques and tools. Check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignments due dates and project deadlines.

Band: What an excellent concert for Grand Friends Day! I love working with these students SO MUCH!

Bible: We’ve been working on a project related to discernment and music. Final memory work is due Thursday, May 12.

History: Next week we will be working through Chapter 4 on colonial life.

Language Arts: The 7th graders will begin their final unit, a novel study of Sharon Flake’s The Skin I’m In. The final draft of Paideia is due Tuesday, May 10.

PE: We will continue our lacrosse unit. Students should be prepared to go outside!

Pre-Algebra (Kiser): Translations, reflections and dilations on a coordinate plane.

Spanish: 7th Graders have a SER vs. ESTAR QUIZ coming up. 7W and 7H on Tuesday; 7B on Thursday. They have study materials and an assignment for practice.

Eighth Grade:

Sandwich Sale: Remember that the Sandwich Sale Forms are due on this coming Tuesday, May 10. We will be making the sandwiches on Tuesday, May 17 and they will be ready to be picked up that afternoon.

GRCHS Theatre Dept: The Theatre Department is holding an after school workshop for students on May 9, from 3-5 PM followed by a meeting with parents from 5-5:30.This is a very important meeting for all who may be interested in auditioning for next year’s musical.It will be too late to make this choice when they arrive at the high school in the fall.We will look forward to meeting those who may be interested on Monday, May 9th.


Algebra (Witte): Next week we will focus on the Pythagorean Theorem, the Distance Formula, and the Mid-Point Formula.  

Algebra (8th): We are working with quadratic functions. At the end of the week students will receive a few review materials for the final exam.

Art: The 8th graders should be completed with the tiling of their space invader project. If students have not completed this project it can be completed before school, at lunch, during a study hall, and/or after school. Additionally, please make sure that your student has completed the yellow invasion plan sheet. Check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignments due dates and project deadlines.

Band: What an excellent concert for Cascade Christian Church and Grand Friends Day! I love working with these students SO MUCH!

Bible: Book of Memories Chapter 8 due on Thursday. We only have a few class days left, and we will be looking at the book of Revelation. Our final Bible memory is due on Tuesday May 17.

History: We will be taking our test on the Civil War on Thursday morning.

Language Arts: 8th graders will be completing their final unit, a novel study of Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy by Gary Schmidt. They will also be preparing for their exam.

PE: We will continue our lacrosse unit. Students should be prepared to go outside!

Science: Students are completing group projects about four “geoscenarios” including glaciers, coal, oil, and the Yellowstone hotspot. Exam review materials have been posted on moodle. We will do quite a bit of review in class over the next two weeks.

Spanish: “Cumulative Test” on Friday for both classes! A little of everything from over the years. This is not an “exam,” but will count as a regular test grade for this trimester. There are several resources at the very top of their Spanish Moodle class page.
