Wildcats of the Month

ACS is dedicated to educating the whole child -- mind, body, and soul in Christian education. Students who demonstrate excellence in these areas are nominated and voted on by teachers in grades 5-8.

ACS is thrilled to announce our first Wildcat of the Month award winners for January!

Fifth Grade: 

Reproductive Education: As you have some extra time with your child over the coming months, please find an opportunity to discuss Reproductive Health. At the end of May, after Spring Camp, the 5th grade team plans to begin a short unit on Reproductive Education. Mrs. Gerig and Mrs. Reidsma will meet with the girls while Mr. Stepanek will meet with the boys. In addition to going over the physical aspects of puberty, we plan to include discussions on God’s design for our bodies and reproduction, as well as treating our bodies with dignity and respect. Please have a conversation with your child before we have this conversation at school. If any parent would like more information, let one of us know and we would be happy to talk with you. More detailed information will be sent out in the coming months.

Valentine’s Day: If 5th graders want to bring in a goodie or a card for Valentine’s Day, we kindly ask that they bring in enough for each student in their homeroom class (5R-18, 5S-17, 5G-16).

Disinfectant Wipes Needed:We are still in need of disinfecting wipes in 5th grade. Would you be willing to send in a container next week? Thank you in advance.


Art: All 5th grades are working on some aspect of the Mark Rothko project. Next up, A project inspired by Amedeo Modigliani

Bible: This week in Bible we began to look at Jesus’ miracles. Students are creating a miracle illustration collage to represent different miracles.

History: We are beginning our next unit on the 13 colonies! 

Language Arts: Keep encouraging those 5th graders to read at home for BOB!

Math: Students are finishing MAP tests today. We are going to be graphing on a coordinate plane early next week. Look for a quiz early next week and a test late next week. 

Music - Band: We are working hard on our full band numbers, yay! :) Mini concert on Mon, Feb 24 - watch email for details. :)

Music - Choir: Lots of songs...and getting ready for the Symphony.

PE: We are working on putting together  jump rope routines with small groups that we will be performing in front of class. 

Science: We continue to work through our unit on systems. This week we were focusing on our nervous systems!

Sixth Grade:

Disinfectant Wipes Needed: We are still in need of disinfecting wipes in 6th grade. Would you be willing to send in a container next week? Thank you in advance.


Art: 6th graders are all working on the watercolor project. Please make sure to check with your 6th grader an see if their homework/sketchbooks are getting completed. All projects, homework, and sketchbook due dates are posted on the homework calendar. 

Bible: This week in Bible we began to talk about Paul’s first missionary journey looking at the culture, geography, and events that took place.

History: Next week we will conclude our study of Ancient Egypt with a test (Tues., 2/4) and begin the 6th grade culture unit. This culture unit will help students prepare for World Fair.

Language Arts: We hope to begin researching and learning about a variety of cultures around the world. This is the first unit in our big World Fair project. Do you know someone who is from a different country/culture that would be willing to speak to the 6th graders? Please email Bethany Koetje at . Thank you in advance.

Math: Students are finishing MAP tests today. We will continue to write expressions using variables next week.

Music - Band: We continue to work on theory, fundamentals and both individual and group competency.

Music - Choir: We are continuing our unit on the Sound of Music! And also singing, reading notes, solfege, and theory. 

PE: We are working on putting together  jump rope routines with small groups that we will be performing in front of class. 

Science: In 6th grade we are reaching the conclusion of our Electromagnetic Force unit. Test next week Monday!

Seventh Grade:

Art:7th graders are working on drawing their self-portrait as a Lego mini-figure. Lots of work on proportion is happening in this part of the project. All projects, homework, and sketchbook due dates are posted on the homework calendar. 

Bible Huttenga: Students will have a quiz on sermon terminology on Tuesday. In the meantime, we are surveying a second sermon and discussing its strengths and weaknesses. Please consider asking your child what they have learned so far!

Bible Meyaard: This past week we studied different parables where Jesus taught about prayer and made comic strips for one of the parables. Coming next week we will be looking at different individual stories of how God’s people prayed. 

History: We are finishing our unit on Economic Systems. Next week we will do some reviewing and we plan to have a quiz/test later in the week.  

Language Arts: We will be drawing to a close with The Westing Game this week, and we will begin a study of parts of speech.

Math - Algebra: We finished linear systems this week and are moving into exponential functions and sequences. Continue to encourage your children- this math is tough!

Math - Pre-Algebra: Next week Wednesday we will take a test on Chapter 10 which covers probability and measures of center and variability.  After that, we are learning how to work with algebraic expressions. 

Music - Band: We continue to work on theory, fundamentals and both individual and group competency.

Music - Choir: We are just finishing our Seven Brides for Seven Brothers unit. We are exploring the 1850s and what it would have been like to live back then by looking at projects and ideas. Great thoughts from your 7th graders...wow.

PE: We just finished designing our own jump rope routines with small groups that we each performed  in front of class. Additionally please remind students to continue to work on their monthly fitness logs (January fitness log is due next week).

Science: We are investigating the periodic table by looking at different families. Next week we will dive a little deeper into reading the periodic table and understanding what it tells us about the atoms making up each element. 

Eighth Grade:

On Thursday, Feb 06 Lowell High School will have an orientation meeting for prospective high school students. The meeting will be held in the Lowell Performing Arts Center from 7:00-8:30pm. If you have questions please contact Nicole Deckrow ()


Art: 8th graders are working on creating their family shapes out of cardboard. All cardboard build will be wrapped up next week and then plastering begins. All projects, homework, and sketchbook due dates are posted on the homework calendar. 

BibleHutt: Continuing to study The Case for Faith, by Lee Strobel. Next week students will be given some more time to work on their final essay, “My Articulation of Faith So Far”, and will also be given a parent interview assignment. Parents, Huttenga will send an email with more details in the middle of the week. 

BibleVN: We continue to study/read The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel.

History: We are preparing for a test on the first seven presidents this coming Wednesday. Students have three note sheets to use to help study for the test. Later in the week, we will learn about the Industrial Revolution of the early 1800s and the impact it had on the United States.

Language Arts: We have completed the giver and are now learning a formula for deducing themes from a text. As students begin to study for the test on the novel, they will also postulate themes from the book, and also begin coming up with themes they would like to express in the creative nonfiction project we will begin. We will begin a study of parts of speech as well.

Science: This week we began our Gravity and Kinetic Energy Kit. Students designed slow flying paper airplanes to practice calculating speed. We will be diving into acceleration next week.
