General Announcements

We are so excited to announce that Mr. and Mrs. Westrate welcomed Micah James into their family on Oct 31. He was 8lb 4oz and 21 inches long. The family is doing well.

Fifth Grade: 

Important Dates: Water Walk - Nov 13 & Rice Week 18-22 (further details in Bible section).


Art: 5th grade continues to work on printing.  Some students in 5R are working on printing their cut designs.

Bible: This week in Bible we wrapped up the Pentateuch by turning in Pentateuch Books and a quiz. In November we study global awareness in Bible & LA. Here is a letter that went home with your child today. Please read the letter carefully and check your email for volunteer opportunities.

History: Students are becoming experts on their assigned Native American group, preparing to report all that they have learned to their classmates. 

Language Arts: Students will have a short quiz on Friday (Nov 08) on figurative language and sound devices. We have done several activities with these in class. Here is a quick explanation of each.

Math: The students have been doing a great job at dividing by 1 digit divisors. Ask them about the "Crossnumber" they made in class! They will have a test next week Wednesday. 

Music - Band: We’d like to invite you to come hear your 5th graders on Thursday Nov 07 during band time at school. Check your email for the details! We can’t wait to play for you!!!

Music - Choir: We will be singing at the Christmas Concert on Dec 12 at school. Yay!

Music - Orchestra: We are practicing page 22 and will have a playing quiz on Monday and Tuesday on #55 through 58.  

PE: Students have been learning about and playing soccer. They are focusing on learning different positions and applying into a game setting. They will start a soccer tournament next week.

Spanish: Students are reviewing a story using a draw and match activity.  The story is broken up into 18 sentences and students draw a scene while another team will match the sentence to the drawing.  This is a great repetition of Spanish in context! We are moving on to a new story in November.

Sixth Grade:

Devotion Sign-up: Sign up to lead devotions for our 6th Graders on a Thursday (8:00-8:10am) this school year. We love to have parents and guests come to share a story, song, verse, prayer or devotional with us!

Weekend Chicken Checkup: Check to to see when your family is on the schedule for weekend chores. If you have a conflict on your assigned weekend, please work in advance to switch with another family. Art: 6th grade students are completing their first project and transitioning into a unit on drawing portraits. Please check the homework calendar for project due dates and sketchbook assignments. 

Bible: This week in Bible we continued reading The Case for Christ for Kids collecting evidence for Christ’s life and resurrection. We also learned about the Reformation and celebrated homestead week with apple cider and pioneer activities!

History: Through a series of simulations, students have been facing problems ancient people confronted in establishing civilization and experiencing the solution to those problems. 

Language Arts: Students have been working on citing evidence from texts, using subjective and objective pronouns appropriately, and reviewing similes, metaphors, and personification in our novel study as well as recognizing how they are used in music, books, and daily communication, etc. The 6th graders also continue to use the program Clips to create book trailers. We are busy!

Math: The students have been doing a great job with the difficult concepts of multiplying mixed numbers and converting fractions. Next week we will be looking at dividing fractions by fractions, and fractions by mixed numbers. There will be a test next week Friday. 

Music - Band: We will be playing at the Christmas Concert at school on Dec 12. Preparations have begun (maybe this is why it snowed this week!)

Music - Choir: We will be singing at the Christmas Concert at school on Dec 12. Preparations have begun!

Music - Orchestra: We are working on songs and exercises in 6/ 8 time and scales with flats. We are also learning pieces for the Christmas Concert at school on Dec 12! Fun music- ask for a short sneak peek at the music.

Spanish: This past week we learned about the running of the bulls in Spain discussing the seeing, and then  running - not walking from the bulls! We will be starting a mini unit next week on colors, clothing and the word “like.”

Seventh Grade:

Art: 7th graders have a sculpture project due on Monday 11/4. In class students are working on an abstract texture paintings working to explore, creating, highlight texture. Please check the homework calendar for project due dates and sketchbook assignments. 

Bible Huttenga: 7th graders just completed a quiz on terminology used to discuss sermons. The can now define what it means for a sermon to be Biblical, Authentic, Contextual, and Life-Changing, as well as use real examples to back them up. We will be viewing and discussing our second sermon this coming week. 

History: We are reviewing and planning on taking a test on Climate Zones on Thursday.  Students have a review sheet on Google docs and we will have some Quizlet flashcards for review early next week.

Language Arts: On Monday students will begin conferencing with Huttenga about their Organism Monologues to make sure their final draft is ready. To make the conference as efficient and productive as possible, students are first completing a self-assessment guide. Meanwhile, we have begun our first class novel study and are reading The Witch of Blackbird Pond together. So far we have been focusing on reading strategies that help make sense of text that can sometimes be tricky, including utilizing context clues for vocabulary acquisition and prediction-making. Students can expect a brief comprehension quiz at the end of the week. Other weekly assignments/quizzes can be expected - check Moodle for details.  

Math - 7th Math: Tax, mark-up, discount,& & simple interest are topics we continue to study. Our test on percent will be Wednesday, Nov 6. A practice test can be found on the last page of your student’s chapter 2 note packet. 

Math - Algebra: We are working through functions- writing them in slope intercept form, doing transformations with these lines, and graphing absolute value functions. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are working through chapter 4 on exponents and scientific notation.  We will be working through this chapter all of next week.

Music - Band: We perform at ACS on Nov 12 for our judges! Time schedules come out next week. Please encourage practice at home! 

Music - Choir: We will be singing at the Christmas Concert at school on Dec 12. Preparations have begun!

Music - Orchestra: All  7th grade string players will perform for a judge on Tuesday, Nov 12 right here at ACS. Most students still have some notes and rhythms to perfect. Performances will be in the orchestra room and times will be sent home next week.

Science: This week in science we spent a good amount of time determining what is needed in order for a food chain to be sustainable. Students started with equal numbers of wolves, gulls, and shrimp- but after each round adjusted numbers and rules to have a sustainable ecosystem. Next week we will be looking deeper into trophic levels and decomposers. 

Spanish: TEST on Tuesday, November 4th.  Students should study from the review sheet and their blue Spanish folders.  They can also find this information on Moodle.

Eighth Grade:

Yearbook Pictures and Baby Pictures:

If you would like to submit a different picture for our school yearbook than the picture taken by our school photographer, please plan on submitting those pictures by the end of November () . Pictures should be vertical in orientation and mostly a “head and shoulders” or “waist up” style picture.

For the Baby Picture, you may submit those either as digital images or as printed photos. Please email the images to Dani Buchanan at dbuchanan@adachristian.org.

NorthPointe Christian High School Preview Day Thurs, Nov 07

Art: 8th graders have begun working on their ceramic pots. Please ask your students what they are creating, what texture they going to include on the pot, and what their lid might look like if they are creating a lidded pot.  Also, encourage students to be learning and reviewing the ceramic terms for the future quiz. Please check the homework calendar for project due dates and sketchbook assignments. 

BibleHutt: We are reading, discussing, and reflecting on The Case for Faith by Lee Strobel. In this study, 8th graders are learning about major objections to the Christian such as the problem of suffering and religious exclusivity - as well as how to contend with and answer those difficult questions. Students have also been introduced to their final project for the class, an essay titled “My Articulation of Faith (So Far)”. Since the end of the first trimester is approaching, final dates for this project will be announced far before it is due so students can plan ahead.

BibleVN: We are watching “The Case for Christ” movie, and will be preparing for a test shortly as well. We have finished reading the book.

History: We will be taking our Chapter 6 test on the American Revolution on Wednesday.

Language Arts: Students will be submitting their final versions of the NHD outline at the end of class on Monday, Nov. 4. The grading will be completed as soon as possible and the score will be included in the T1 report card. Meanwhile, students have been looking back at their independent novel-reading and are beginning to select their first candidate for a literature critique. Students were required to select their book and lay the groundwork for the literary concepts they’ll be discussing - in the coming week, students will be able to draft their critique. Other weekly assignments/quizzes will apply - see Moodle for details.   

Math - Algebra: We are working through functions- writing them in slope intercept form, doing transformations with these lines, and graphing absolute value functions. 

Math - Geometry: Next week we will be working with Transformations: Reflection, Rotation, & Dilation. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are working through chapter 4 and will continue to do that next week.

Music - Band: We perform for the judges on Nov 12. We are adjusting our schedule that day - we will perform at 12:25pm in the band room. Parents/Friends are welcome to join us!!

Music - Choir: We will be singing at the Christmas Concert at school on Dec 12. Preparations have begun!

Music - Orchestra: We will perform for a judge from Grand Rapids symphony  in the orchestra room on Tuesday, Nov 12 at 12:35PM . Parents / grandparents  etc. are invited to listen to the 8th grade ensemble perform.

Science: This week in science we began looking into the solar system. We will look more specifically at the planets and what a scaled model of this would look like on ACS property. In the next couple of weeks we will be looking into a few different models of the origins of the world. Please take some time to talk with your children about your thoughts on the topic and engage in the conversation with them. 

Spanish: We continue our unit on Sports.  We will have a vocabulary QUIZ Nov 08.
