Stuff-A-Bus: Book Drive Edition

In celebration of March Is Reading Month, the PTO is organizing a book drive to collect gently used books for children in our community. The books are distributed through a program Mrs. Alphenaar heads up as an officer with the Grand Rapids Police Department Volunteer Unit.
When:
7:45am-3:15pm Wed, March 17
7:45am-3:15pm Thurs, March 18
7:45am-9:00am Fri, March 19
Where: The bus will be at the front of school during these times. Students can enter the front of the bus, drop off the books, and exit through the back of the bus.
What: We’re welcoming all gently used (or new) books for children from birth through 8th grade. Board books, picture books, easy reader books, beginning chapter books, middle grade books, graphic novels, non-fiction...we’d love them all! Books featuring people of color or written in Spanish are especially desired.
Why: Hello, my name is Mrs. Alphenaar and in addition to being an instructional aide at ACS, I am also an officer with the Grand Rapids Police Department Volunteer Unit. My job involves performing many tasks needed to keep the citizens of Grand Rapids safe. Last year when COVID-19 closed schools and libraries, I began to collect/purchase books to hand out to children in the city. This has been a great way for us as officers to connect with children living in Grand Rapids and to promote the importance of reading.
Let's fill the bus!
Trimester Two Report Cards
Report cards come home on Wed, Mar 10. Please sign your child's envelope/slip of paper and return to school.

LEGO League

Led by head coach, Ray Jorgenson, and assistant coach, Manny Scrotenboer, this is the third year ACS has participated in First Lego League. This year’s team was comprised of 5th and 6th graders that engaged in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering ultimately building and programming a LEGO robot that navigated the missions of a robot game. Every year, First Lego League releases a new challenge based on a real-world, scientific theme. This year’s theme was “RePlay” in which teams explored how to get people more active through play. ACS chose the team name “Sploosh” and created an app intended to get people moving through a virtual game of hide and seek. It is really a fantastic concept and the team has been working to gain interest from app developers. Last week, they participated in a week-long regional competition that culminated with a live virtual presentation and interview session before the judging panel. Although our team did not advance to the state competition, they received high scores for their presentation and achieved major strides in their robot programming platform which will prove helpful for next year’s competition. Congratulations team Sploosh!
Interested in signing up for next year’s team? Information will be available in August. Stay tuned!
