5th Grade

Can Drive: C We would love to raise $5,000 to reduce the cost of Spring Camp for the whole 5th grade. Please consider having your child collect and return cans. The money should be brought to the office by Tue, Oct 19.

Art: In class we made good progress with the design step of the prints we are creating. Next we look forward to transferring these designs to the blocks to be cut out. 

Bible: This week we wrapped up the book of Exodus. Also, Miss Leah came to class to chat about Goat Duty. The 10 Commandments Bible memory quiz is Tues, Oct 19.

Language Arts: This week we continued reading Hatchet and learned about story elements such as character types, point of view, and the types of conflict. Next week we will study the different stages of plot and hopefully finish reading Hatchet! Students should be done reading their individual survival stories and be working on their Survival Interview. This is due on Wed, Oct 27. 

Music - Band: The page 9 videos have been great! There is a specific assignment on Google Classroom for practice time - ask your student about it - 3 times of practice this week on 3 pages of music! :)

Music - Choir: We started to listen to the story behind the song “It is Well With My Soul” and we continue to work on reading music as well.

Music - Orchestra: Continue to work in your workbook through page 17. The October practice record is due at the end of the month.

PE: 5th graders have been wrapping up their fitness testing and got tested in push-ups, sit-ups, and the sit-n-reach this week. Additionally, they've been working on their football throwing/catching skills and will be applying it to a game setting next week. All PE uniforms have arrived and been handed out to students this week. 

Science: This week students observed how the sun and Earth interact, and how shadows are made! Even with our cloudy days this week, students got to use flashlights, pencils, and globes to explore these concepts!

Social Studies: This week, students learned about primary and secondary sources and the development of early Native American cultures. 

6th Grade

Art: 6th graders completed a quiz today in class and are working towards wrapping up their traditional self-portraits with completing the value work. Next we will dive into work on self-portrait that is not so traditional. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.

Bible: This week we wrapped up the archaeology dig. We also had OE with Miss Leah where the students took the Myers Briggs personality test and learned about the personalities of the people on their chicken duty teams. 

Language Arts: This week we continued to read Tuck Everlasting. We discussed character motivation, identified examples of figurative language throughout the story, and analyzed the traits of new characters. Next week we will have a quiz on the vocabulary words from Sections 1-2 of the story. The quiz is on Tues, Oct 19. This quiz will be on Google Classroom, so if your child is not at school on Tuesday, please encourage them to take the quiz at home. 

Music - Band: Videos were due Friday - some great ones have been coming in. We are working in the method book, a concert book and some sheet music too.

Music - Choir: We continue to work on theory and singing and lots of songs!

Music - Orchestra: Keep practicing the pieces provided and the workbook. The October Video is due Thurs, Oct 28.

Additionally, they've been working on their football throwing/catching skills and will be applying it to a game setting next week. All PE uniforms have arrived and been handed out to students this week. 

Science: This week, students started exploring the reasons behind our weather, and we even got to discuss our big storm on Tuesday!

Social Studies: We wrapped up our geography unit this week. Ask to see your student’s 5 themes brochure - they turned out great!

7th Grade

Art: 7th graders handed in their texture painting today and moved into learning about the British sculptor Henry Moore in preparation for our next project. The students also got to experiment with the material and tools we will be sculpting with in class. Next time in class we will design a sculpture and begin craving it out. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.

Bible: In Bible we are looking at praying and how we can model our prayers to be effective and appropriate for the environment that students are in. Bible Memory is Matthew 6:33-34 and will be due Thurs, Oct 28.

History: We concluded the last unit with a test and started a unit on the Era of Jefferson. We’ll look at the importance of Jefferson and compare his ideals with the reality of his life and presidency. Then we’ll move on to the War of 1812.

Language Arts: We will continue to learn about and practice the roles of Reading Groups as we continue with the beginning of The Witch of Blackbird Pond. 

Math - 7th Math: We are just finishing our chapter on ratios and proportional relationships with a test today. Next week we will be starting with a new chapter on percentages.

Math - Algebra: We will finish up Chapter 2 by spending our short week together reviewing compound and absolute value inequalities. Our test will the Tuesday following our fall break. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: In Pre-Algebra students are starting Chapter 4 on Roots and Powers. This chapter has quite a few rules that are new to students. We fill out a worksheet that has a list of all the power rules that will be helpful for students to study for eventual quizzes and test.

Music - Band: The Solo and Ensemble letter came home (it’s blue). Here is a link you could use to sign it. Students have a four-week practice paper to work on. CHARGE - they can do it, and they need to begin right now. Recordings of solos and accompaniments are on their Google Classroom.

Music - Orchestra: The signed form for Solo and Ensemble is due on Mon, Oct 18. Make sure that you are practicing ALREADY for Solo and Ensemble. The date is incorrect on the form and is TBD, hopefully Tues, Nov16. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. This is not something that your child should be practicing at the last minute.

Science: We are talking about the periodic table, how it was created, how it is organized and what information can be found on it. 

8th Grade

Butter Braid Sale: Students should have come home yesterday with their butter braid ordering form. Please note two things: One- Students should ask that all customers make out their checks to you and you should write one check to Ada Christian School for the full amount. Two- When the butter braids come home (Thurs, Nov 18), they will need to be frozen until they are delivered to the customer. 

Yearbook Pictures and Baby Pictures: Please read the details below.

Yearbook Pictures 

  • 8th graders may submit a different image for the yearbook than the traditional school photograph.
  • It should be a portrait image (vertical, not horizontal).
  • The image should mostly be a "head and shoulders" or "waist up" shot.
  • Please no pets
  • If a digital file...300 dpi or more, image size should be equivalent to a 8 x 10, the image file size should be between 2 MB and 10 MB
  • Please send the images to Dani Buchanan ()
  • Due date: Dec 01, 2021

"Baby Pictures" for Yearbook and Graduation

  • Each student needs to submit one "Baby Picture" that we can use for both the yearbook and at graduation.
  • You may submit either a digital image or an actual photo. (The picture will be returned quickly and safely.)
  • The "baby picture" can be from the time your student was a baby or up to a young child. 
  • These pictures can be fun, sweet, cute, and all of that! 
  • Please send the images to Dani Buchanan (dbuchanan@adachristian.org) or have your student drop off the photo to Miss Buchanan in the office.

Art: 8th graders completed an exercise with a partner this week to help prepare students for building their ceramic pots. Next Tuesday 10/19 the blue ceramic pot think sheet is due and students will conference with Mr. W about their ideas and create a base template in preparation for building their pots. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.

Bible VanNoord: We are finishing the book of Matthew with a Capstone project, seeing how God’s promises are fulfilled in Matthew all the way from the beginning (genealogy) to the end (salvation and the Great Commission). The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.

History: We’ve begun studying the Industrial Revolution, looking particularly at how it changed culture as we move our way towards the Civil War. Students are working on a project, researching an invention to teach its importance to classmates in classroom presentations.

Language Arts: Since we only have two days before fall break, 8th graders will be continuing to research on Monday and Tuesday. Resources and info will be provided for students who feel they are ready to start creating an outline. When we return from the break, we will continue to explore the opening chapters of The Giver.

Math - Algebra: This week we finished up our chapter on solving linear equations and took a test on the material on Tuesday. We then moved on to our new topic of solving linear inequalities. The students have been doing very well with the new material and are showing increased effort and attitude to take on the learning. We have a quiz on writing and solving inequalities on Monday.

Math - Geometry: In Geometry we continue to learn about parallel and perpendicular lines and the angle relationships that come with them.

Music - Band: Band video was due today. 3 new pieces to be working on and a dedicated schedule for practice will be on Google Classroom for next week.

Music - Choir: Music is used in so many ways and places in our world - it’s amazing to see/hear. We looked at a VR use of music, at movie music by John Williams (he conducted it live with the President’s Own Marine Band), and Youtube worship music as well.

Science: We have learned all the moon phases and their rise, set, and zenith times. We are talking about the different types of eclipses and will finish that up next week Monday and Tuesday.

Athletics

It came down to ACS blue v. ACS white in the finals! Our two 5/6 soccer teams finished 1st and 2nd in the GRACEAC postseason tournament last night! Go Wildcats!

Today is the deadline to sign up for 5-8 ACS Boys Basketball sign-ups. The season is scheduled to run from Oct 25-Christmas Break.
