Fifth Grade:

Art: 5th grade is starting to work on printmaking.

Bible: This week in Bible we continued working through our Pentateuch books by discussing the stories of Jacob & Esau, Rachel & Leah, as well as Joseph.

History: Students will begin working on their next project in social studies. They will be creating their own country, applying all they have learned so far in geography.

Language Arts: Students will reflect on the survival activities with writings/poems. They will also complete spelling activities and continue to learn and enjoy Hatchet. Most students have picked out a survival story and should be reading this book at home as well as at school.

Math: The first math test came home this week. Look for the test in your 5th grader’s binder. We also took a quiz on the first few lessons of Chapter 2. Remember, a student can retake a quiz if they get a parent signature on their first quiz. This signature shows that the student has looked over the first quiz and knows what corrections need to be made. Next week we will be looking at multiplying numbers and using the distributive property.

Music - Band: Practice Calendars are due Oct 1! There is a basket in the band room for them. The band is doing great work - it’s so fun to see and hear and experience!

Music - Choir: We are working on learning notes, rhythms, and singing songs.

PE: We have started an “Ultimate Football Tournament” this week and will finish up next week. This will conclude our football unit and we will be moving on to some fitness testing. Please encourage students to try and remain active outside of PE class.

Science: We’re zooming out from Earth to study our planetary neighborhood this coming week.

Spanish: Presentations next week!  Students have created slide presentations and are ready to present in class.  They do not need to work on this at home. But I do hope they share with you!

Sixth Grade:

Weekend Chicken Checkup: Check to to see when your family is on the schedule for weekend chores. If you have a conflict on your assigned weekend, please work in advance to switch with another family. Click here for the instructions for Weekend Chicken Checkup. Questions? Contact Bill Hoo at 616.250.0089

Devotion Sign-up: Sign up to lead devotions for our 6th Graders on a Thursday (8:00-8:10am) this school year. We love to have parents and guests come to share a story, song, verse, prayer or devotional with us!

Service Project: Thank you so much for those who served alongside the 6th graders over the past 2 days. We appreciate your support of this meaningful experience in the lives of these kids!

Art: 6th grade is starting to work on visually displaying the way they see God in their life and working on creating unique patterns.  Please check the homework calendar for homework and project due dates.

Bible: This week we studied how Jesus was loving and a servant, writing down evidence from select passages in the Bible. Our loving action item was writing sincere compliments to every classmate - ask your child to show you their compliment card. We are also practicing serving through the Service Project.

History: Students will continue working on their group landform projects. Students may begin collecting art supplies for their dioramas (ex. popsicle sticks, toothpicks, cardboard, playdough, etc.).

Language Arts: We continue to read and enjoy Tuck Everlasting.  We will also learn our spelling words through a variety of methods and activities this week. Don’t forget to ask your child about the book trailers we made.

Math: The first math test came home this week. Look for the test in your 6th grader’s binder. Next week we will be converting between fractions, decimals, and percents. There will be a short quiz on Wednesday of next week.

Music - Band: The first practice calendar is due Oct 01. We have been making great progress. We will have some quizzes from our band books soon.

Music - Choir: We heard the entire story of It is Well With My Soul. We are planning projects that connect to the story of the song. Ask your student what he/she plans to make or do. These are not due until Oct 11. Note: If their project relates to the Great Chicago Fire and they want to do anything with actual fire at home, parental participation is mandatory! (they know this….if there is a Chicago video, the parent who is helping needs to wave at the beginning of the video so we all see them….)

PE: We have started an “Ultimate Football Tournament” this week and will finish up next week. This will conclude our football unit and we will be moving on to some fitness testing. Please encourage students to try and remain active outside of PE class.

Science: We will continue to explore the world of tiny living organisms with our microscopes this week.

Spanish: Student’s have completed Unit 1 and tests are being graded. We will start a new unit next week about Spain and the running of the bulls.

Seventh Grade:

Service Project: God is so good. We were blessed with perfect weather yesterday, positive attitudes, and many good moments. We spent much of the day cutting and moving wood, digging out a backstop, cleaning cabins and the dining hall, rebuilding stairs that were falling apart, shoveling gravel, and digging weeds out of cracks. Good work was done, relationships were built and strengthened, and capture the flag was dominated by our 7th graders. We are so proud of the incredible 7th and 8th graders we have here at ACS.

Art: 7th grade is working on their sculptures and will add gesso and begin thinking about color and line. Please check the homework calendar for homework and project due dates.

Bible: The 7th graders will be working on creating an anthology of devotionals as they study the process of using real-life passions and anecdotes to help illustrate messages found in the Bible.

History: Next week we will start a new unit focusing on key landforms and climate zones.

Language Arts: Students will be learning more about descriptive writing, sensory details, and visual adjectives & verbs. In writing workshop we’ll discuss and practice the “Rule of a Pebble”, and continue to grow descriptive vocabulary. As Parent-teacher conferences and the midpoint of the trimester approaches, students will be assessing their reading habits and progress so far. We will begin discussing elements of plot and conflict in literature. Weekly assignments will resume this week, so check the Moodle homework calendar to know what is due and when.

Math - 7th Math: Next week we will be solving proportions.

Math - Algebra: Now that we have mastered our basics, we are moving on to applying those skills. We will plan on having a test next week Friday.

Math - Pre-Algebra: Next week we will finish Chapter 2 on integers and plan on taking a test.

Music - Band: We have our solo packets for our Solo/Ensemble project. Next week we will start choosing which solos we want to work on. There are recordings on Moodle they can access to help choose.

Music - Choir: We are singing lots of songs that relate to our theme, and also working on a Stomp project. We will show you at a concert!

PE: We have started an “Ultimate Football Tournament” this week and will finish up next week. This will conclude our football unit and we will be moving on to some fitness testing. Please encourage students to try and remain active outside of PE class.

Science: We took our first 7th grade science test this year. Next week we will begin looking pretty in depth at producers- what they are and do, and  why we need them.

Spanish: We are wrapping up unit 5.  Next week we will review and our test is on Oct 04.

Eighth Grade:

Service Project: God is so good. We were blessed with perfect weather yesterday, positive attitudes, and many good moments. We spent much of the day cutting and moving wood, digging out a backstop, cleaning cabins and the dining hall, rebuilding stairs that were falling apart, shoveling gravel, and digging weeds out of cracks. Good work was done, relationships were built and strengthened, and capture the flag was played. We are so proud of the incredible 7th and 8th graders we have here at ACS.

BibleHutt: As we get closer to the end of The Last Battle, students will begin planning a written and visual project to demonstrate how the story fits in with our school’s theme this year. There will be a second quiz covering the last half of the book later in the week.

BibleVN: We shared parables and/or Jesus miracles and stories with preschoolers and 2nd graders this week. It was so great to see the little ones listening to your 8th graders.

History: We are reviewing and taking our test on Chapter 5 on Thursday.

Language Arts: After several weeks of research, it is about time for the 8th graders to begin work with outlining and creating a visual plan for their essay. This will take considerable work, but students have developed a coding system already to help with the organization of their notes. Many resources for outlining will be available on Moodle, and students will write their outline in Google Classroom. The tentative due date for the draft of the outline is Oct 11. We will resume spelling quizzes, and due dates for typical weekly assignments apply.
