Back to School Party!

Fifth Grade
Survival Camp: Survival Camp is Sept 23-24. More details will be sent out Fri, Sept. 17.
Fundraiser: We are trying to raise at least $5,000 to help keep Spring Camp costs low. Please encourage your child to collect cans to help us reach our goal! Please bring the money you’ve raised to the front office by Oct 19.
Art: In class we have completed glazing our ceramic pots that will be buried in the archeological dig site at school. Next week we start a new art project.
Bible: This week we began our unit on the Pentateuch. Students Bible journaled through the stories in their “Pentateuch Books.” We covered the story of creation, as well as the fall. John 1:1-2 is due Fri., Sept. 17.
Language Arts: This week we continued to read Hatchet. We learned about imagery, and we took notes on when the author uses imagery related to “sight” and “touch” as we read. We also did some journaling on our biggest fears to try and relate to our main character, Brian, who had to crash land a plane all on his own! Next week, students will pick out their own survival book to read alongside Hatchet and make text-to-text connections.
Math: We wrapped up Chapter 1 with a test on Friday. Next week Monday and Tuesday the fifth grade students will be taking the Math MAP tests. Later in the week we will begin Chapter 2 - Multiplying Whole Numbers.
Music - Band: Practice in your books through the first sections of the books - each instrument has a different number of pages - 15-20 minutes per practice session will help develop and build muscle/technique. It’s a process, and it’s amazing to see the progression! Best ways to help - encourage regular practice at home, and set up a stand/place to practice with good posture, a good chair and music stand. Play through as many pages of your book as you can.

Music - Choir: We are learning our notes using Music Ace - we need to get our clefs learned well. We are also singing songs for our school theme and learning songs with movement too.
Music - Orchestra: Practice through page 15 in your book. The Pink Handbook Sheet was due today. Also please fill out your September practice records that are due at the end of the month! The goal is 30-45 minutes minimum a week.

PE: This week we started our soccer unit, students have been working on their soccer skills and applying it to soccer style games. Next week we'll be learning more specific soccer rules and playing more traditional soccer. PE uniforms for all 5th grade students will be arriving soon! In the meantime, students should be bringing extra “athletic” clothes to change into for class.
Science: This week we used our lovely ACS farm animals to help us learn about observations and inferences! Students were very excited to get outside, and learn about the animals they will be taking care of this year.
Social Studies: This week we studied a U.S. physical map and spent some time learning about latitude and longitude. Next week, we will take the MAP Reading Test in social studies class.

6th Grade
Looking Ahead:
Service Project and Sleepover (Sept 23 & 24): Please fill out this form so that we can collect your permission for your child to participate in our all day service and all-night sleepover events on Sep 23 and 24. This event is still morphing as we go, we are finding creative ways to serve in our community.
Art: 6th graders have started learning how to properly and proportionally draw a face. Ask you 6th grader how old the “rules” for drawing a face proportionally are. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
Bible: This week we continued to talk about our identity in Christ. We specifically talked about remaining connected to God (John 15) and knowing His voice (John 10). Psalm 139:13-14 is due Fri., Sept. 17. Outside Inside Bags are due Wed., Sept. 29 (this is the updated date).
Language Arts: This week we continued to read Tuck Everlasting, and we took our first Spelling Achievement test. This test will not be entered as a grade in PowerSchool; it is simply a way for your student and me to know what spelling words we should focus on for the start of the year. We also started filling out job application forms for our sixth grade egg business, Got Yolk. Applications are due on Mon, Sep. 13. We will record our job interviews using Flipgrid on Wed, Sep. 15. Students are asked to dress nicely and “business-like” on this day to make the interview feel more real-life! (They may bring clothes to change into.)
Math: We are wrapping up Chapter 3 - Computing with Multi-Digit Numbers with a text next week Wednesday (Sept. 15). The 6th graders have a review sheet, but one can also be found on google classroom.

Spanish: Story Acting! Students love acting out stories in Spanish. Today we acted out the story “La muchacha misteriosa” - The Mysterious Girl. There was much intrigue, suspicious behaviour and an escape with persuit.
7th Grade
Art: 7th graders have created paintings with texture, spray painted their creations and next week will begin working to draw in attention/focus into their piece through the use of acrylic paints. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
Bible: In Bible we are beginning our unit on Prayer. Students will be studying the details that prayer entails. Students will be receiving a prayer journal in which they will have a handful of assignments to complete. Our next Bible memory Quiz will be on Thursday the 23rd of September.
History: We are continuing our study of the first governments of the US, focusing this week on the Constitution. We’ll finish up our study of the Constitution next week and have a test on Friday.
Language Arts: Students will take the first round of the Language MAP tests on Monday, Sept 13. An independent reading assignment is also due that day. Students will be writing a series of micro-memoirs based on a poem they’ve written. We will be discussing and practicing writing that evokes the senses and puts the reader in the emotional shoes of the writer.
Math - 7th Math: This week we have been finishing up our chapter on operations with positive and negative integers and will be taking the first test on Tuesday. Next week we are moving on to study ratios and proportional reasoning. Students will begin their MAP tests on Wednesday, Sept 15.
Math - Algebra: We have fully stepped into our Algebra course and have started chapter 1. There will be a quiz on Tuesday covering sections 1.1-1.3 and we will also begin MAP testing at the end of the week.
Math - Pre-Algebra: We have just completed Chapter 1 and will begin Chapter 2 on Integers this week. This chapter will have some lessons where a calculator is not allowed. We will be doing MAPs testing September 21-23
Music - Band: Our first band assignment is due Sep 30 and involves practicing all sorts of things from songs to scales to entire pages.
Music - Choir: We are singing all sorts of songs….getting up and moving, and learning songs from the theme for this year as well.

Spanish: This week we prepared for our unit and class story act, by learning and practicing our new set of useful words. Students keep a picture dictionary of these words in their classroom folders. A digital copy is available on Google Classroom as well as a Quizlet link for online practice games.
8th Grade
Class Photo: We will be taking a picture of the 8th grade class on Thursday, Sep 16, 2021 before 1st hour.
Yearbook Pictures and Baby Pictures: Please read the details below.
Yearbook Pictures
- 8th graders may submit a different image for the yearbook than the traditional school photograph.
- It should be a portrait image (vertical, not horizontal).
- The image should mostly be a "head and shoulders" or "waist up" shot.
- Please no pets
- If a digital file...300 dpi or more, image size should be equivalent to a 8 x 10, the image file size should be between 2 MB and 10 MB

"Baby Pictures" for Yearbook and Graduation
- Each student needs to submit one "Baby Picture" that we can use for both the yearbook and at graduation.
- You may submit either a digital image or an actual photo. (The picture will be returned quickly and safely.)
- The "baby picture" can be from the time your student was a baby or up to a young child.
- These pictures can be fun, sweet, cute, and all of that!
- Please send the images to Dani Buchanan (dbuchanan@adachristian.org) or have your student drop off the photo to Miss Buchanan in the office.
Art: 8th graders are completing transfer of their name/initial chop designs and are poised to start cutting out their name/initial chop designs with all the super cool printmaking tools, which would be an awesome thing to ask your 8th grader about what tools they will be using. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
Bible VanNoord: We are reading through the book of Matthew and finding things in the book that surprise us (lots of Angel visits), shock us(King Herod killing so many baby boys) and amaze us (Jesus healing people instantly...disciples immediately following him….etc.). As we read we are filling out a chart with takeaways and will do a few projects about what we learn.
Bible Schaefer: We are learning about the gospels as a whole and specifically have gotten started with the book of Matthew. As we read we are filling out a chart with takeaways and will do a few projects about what we learn. We had our first memory verse quiz this week on Psalm 145:13-14.
History: We finished up our study of the Constitution with a test this Friday. Next week we have the MAP reading test and begin our next unit on the First Presidents.
Language Arts: This week we will have topics picked for the NHD historical research-writing project. Students will be briefed on creating an outline and the steps they’ll need to follow to create one. We will be doing extensive research, and students can expect to spend three days a week taking notes on their topics during LA. A reading inventory is due Monday the 13th, and we will take the LA MAP test on the 20th.
Math - Algebra: This week we have been finishing up our “Unit 0” on the basics of Algebra and will be taking our first test on Tuesday. Next week we are moving on to learn about solving linear equations. Students will begin their MAP tests on Wednesday, Sept 15.
Math - Geometry: Next week we will continue to learn about Geometry basics. There is a good chance we will have a test on Friday covering these concepts!

Science: This week we spent time understanding time zones, how to tell the time and date in other places and why we have time zones in the first place. Next week we will be investigating the reason for seasons. Hint: It isn’t because the Earth is closer to the sun during summer.
Spanish: Story Acting! Today we acted out the story “El lobo hanbriento” - The Hungry Wolf. This story has a fabulous twist with a wolf’s dinner being stolen by a very unkind girl. Drama and revenge, mixed with personal restaurant favorites, made this an intriguing story.
Athletics
All 5-8 fall sport teams have a few weeks of practices completed. Games and meets are scheduled to start next week for all teams, please check your TeamSnap account for your team’s full game schedule.
