Fifth Grade:

Art: We are working on the final step of the abstract landscape paintings.

Band: Band will only meet once next week. Upcoming schedule: Tuesday Sep 27 - Full Band. We will be doing some sectionals the following week. Oct 03 will be all woodwinds and percussion, Oct 04 will be brass. Oct 06 will be full band again. Please mark your calendars! Thank you!

Bible: We continue to work our way through the Pentateuch. The next Bible memory is coming home today (Psalm 8:5-8). It will be due on Tuesday, October 11.

Math: We are digging deeper into our understanding of converting decimals to fractions and fractions to decimals. We are also learning how exponents work and how to express factors of a number with exponents. Students have been working hard learning their facts and working through problems.

Orchestra:  Students have been working on learning all of the notes and fingerings on the D and A strings. Review pages 6,7,8 and 9 for next week.

PE: We will begin a short flag football unit next week.

Spanish: We are counting to 100!  Students have demonstrated great retention of previously learned numbers, so this will be a quick and easy unit.

Sixth Grade:

Yeeun Lee, a Calvin Teacher Aid has joined Mr. Kiser and will be working with ACS math students. Here is a note from her: “I’m currently in my third year at Calvin College studying as an education major with a math focus and a psychology minor. I’m really excited to be at Ada Christian for these next couple months and am looking forward to getting to know the students and growing as an educator.” – Miss Lee


Art: In class we are working on our pattern hand and will soon begin working on part two of trying to visually show how the artist see God at work in their lives. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignment due dates.

Band: Great work on the Minuet quiz! Next week we only meet on Tuesday - we will play through a lot of things, and no new quiz.

Bible: We enjoyed celebrating each 6th grader through the Outside/Inside Bag presentations.

Choir: It is well with my soul! Projects are officially due Wed Oct 05. Some are already done and will be presented earlier. We don’t have a lot of class time in the next week due to Service Project, but we will get things done and presented in Oct. Yay!

History: We have been working with different topographic maps this week, and will finish off our unit by making a topographic map of Mt. St. Helens before and after the 1980’s volcanic eruption. We will continue to look at different types of maps next week.

Language Arts: This week we took the DEA test and read with our 1st grade buddies. We also made connections and predictions with our novel, Tuck Everlasting.

Math: Next week we will begin studying percents, fractions, and decimals.

PE: We have wrapped up our soccer unit and will begin a short ultimate frisbee unit next week. Students should be prepared to go outside.

Orchestra: Students have been working to learn the notes and bowings for Fantasy! Keep a steady beat in this ¾ time piece.

Science: We invited the kindergarteners to our science lab today. It was so much fun. A unit on Weather and Water is coming up next.

Spanish: With In-service Monday and Service Projects later in the week, there will be no 6th grade Spanish next week. The students have a worksheet on people we know of from the Bible, and are to complete Spanish sentences about them by filling in adjectives we are currently learning. (Answers may vary.)

Seventh Grade:

Algebra (7th): Chapter 3 Test Tuesday. Beginning Chapter 4 (graphing and the coordinate plane) on Wednesday.

Art: The end of the art element and principle project is coming quickly and soon we will begin looking at the art element of texture and creating a project based on texture. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignment due dates.

Band: We are hard at work on our solos. Great strides have been made this week, and the performance date isn’t until Nov. Awesome!

Bible: Wanner/Huttenga: We are learning about devotions and will have a Bible memory on Psalm 119: 103-112 next week Wednesday.

Language Arts: Students will continue working on a project about perspective, descriptive writing and aliens. They will be given a study guide for their upcoming first test on the short stories unit. Students will also want to keep reading their novels for the first one-pager independent reading assignment.

PE: We have wrapped up our soccer unit and will begin a short ultimate frisbee unit next week. Students should be prepared to go outside.

Math: We continue to study ratios, proportions and rate of change. Next week we will be finishing up our unit with a test the following week.

Pre-Algebra: Today we began Ch 3 on Rational Numbers. In this chapter we will really stretch our fraction skills.

Orchestra: Work on Adirondack sheet music!

Science: Continuing Investigation 3. We will wrap up investigation 3 by Tuesday (10/4) which means we will have an assessment towards the end of that week as well.

Spanish: TEST on Wednesday, 9/28. We reviewed yesterday, and students have resources to study on Moodle: Inside and outside the house, and the verb ESTAR.

Eighth Grade:

Art: 8th graders are working on finalizing the cutting out of their prints. We are struggle a little with this process and getting good results, but we are learning and adjusting and the work should soon pay off. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook assignment due dates.

Band: We have played and been quizzed on 6 scales - major and harmonic minor. Great work!

Bible (Westrate): Memory work (Matthew 16:13-16) is due Wednesday. We are studying how the book of Matthew specifically reveals Jesus as the awaited Messiah.

Bible (Huttenga): 8th graders will continue to learn about the birth of the church in the book of Acts. Students will be asked to also acquire a blank notebook of some kind to serve as their Bible journal for the remainder of the year.

Geometry: Students will be taking their chapter 2 test next week.

Language Arts: Students are encouraged to continue researching for the NHD project as needed while Mr. Witte and Mr. Huttenga go over the first drafts of the outline. In the meantime, class will be spent going over various writing techniques that will aid in the development of the first draft of the NHD essay.

PE: We have wrapped up our soccer unit and will begin a short ultimate frisbee unit next week. Students should be prepared to go outside.

Pre-Algebra Enhanced: We have continued to practice order of operation and solving expressions with variables. Our Chapter 2 test was moved back a couple times and is now scheduled for Tuesday. Next up: Rational numbers (fractions).

Orchestra: Focus on perfecting the intonation and counting on your sheet music!

Science: A quiz over investigation 3 (seasons and day-length) took place today. Next up is a study of the moon.

Spanish: We finished our clothing unit and will work on a short iMovie project next week in class.
