Fifth Grade: 

Upcoming transition in Science class: Mr. Manny Schrotenboer will be taking over 5th grade Science classes for Mrs. Westrate while she is gone. His email is free to welcome him!


Art: All 5th grade is working on printmaking and working to get drawings ready for transferring their drawn designs. 

Bible: This week we created mobiles on different feasts and festivals from Leviticus discussing the importance of the holiday and why we as Christians don’t practice these holidays. We also talked about the book of Numbers and the Israelites cycle of disobedience. Pentateuch books are due Wed Oct 30. Please check in with your child to make sure they are making progress. There will be a mini Pentateuch Quiz on Fri, Nov 01.

History: We just started our unit on Native Americans. We will continue reading and learning about the lives of the people living in North America before European exploration.

Language Arts: Students took their first spelling test today. Next week we take a closer look at the how Gary Paulsen uses figurative language in Hatchet. Specifically, we will study onomatopoeia, alliteration, repetition, hyperbole, simile, metaphor, and personification. Survival books must be finished by Mon, Oct 28.

Math: This week we used objects around the room to help us see the relationship between multiplication and division. We also covered dividing with two-digit divisors as well as seeing patterns in division. Next week we will be dividing with three and four-digit dividends. 

Music - Band: Wow - we are doing great work. Keep those excellent practice calendars coming - October is more than half over! Ask for a concert!

Music - Choir: We are learning notes and rhythms….and sometimes we are the Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything.

PE: We have been doing various fitness tests such as; the mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, sit and reach, and shuttle run. Over the next few weeks  will be looking at ways that we can improve in these areas. Additionally, we will be starting our soccer unit after fall break. 

Science: We will end our “Earth and Sun” unit by considering the scope of the universe and how great our God is to have created it all! When students return from fall break, Mr. Schrotenboer will begin a study of “Living Systems.”

Sixth Grade:

Devotion Sign-up: Sign up to lead devotions for our 6th Graders on a Thursday (8:00-8:10am) this school year. We love to have parents and guests come to share a story, song, verse, prayer or devotional with us!

Art: 6th grade are working toward completion of their 1st project.  Please keep an eye on the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.  

Bible: This week we collected evidence on how Jesus was forgiving, committed, and powerful to wrap up our Characteristics of Christ unit. Students are to stay committed to an activity of their choice for the week. Check in with your child to see how they are doing. Also, we will be reading The Case for Christ for Kids and watching the movie Case for Christ in the coming weeks. The movie is rated PG so please fill out this permission slip which provides more information related to the movie.

History: We will begin learning about ancient civilizations. Students will explore problems confronted by ancient peoples in establishing civilizations.

Language Arts: Students took their first spelling test today. Students will need to turn in Weekly Work on Mon Oct 21. Also, independent reading books need to be finished by Mon Oct 28. We will begin creating book trailers that week after fall break. This should be fun and interesting.

Math: We had our test on decimals, fractions, and percents this week. We are now focusing on Multiplying and Dividing fractions. There have been videos posted on google classroom to help with these concepts. If your 6th grader needs that little refresher on how to solve these problems, please direct them to google classroom! 

Music - Band: Wow - we are doing great work. Keep those excellent practice calendars coming - October is more than half over! Ask for a concert!

Music - Choir: We finished presenting our It is Well projects this past week. Lots of meaningful and special work for sure!

PE: We have been doing various fitness tests such as; the mile run, push-ups, sit-ups, sit and reach, and shuttle run. Over the next few weeks  will be looking at ways that we can improve in these areas. Additionally, we will be starting our soccer unit after fall break. 

Science: We are looking forward to observing the bacteria that we have been growing and learning more about both helpful and dangerous bacteria. When students return from fall break, Mr. Schrotenboer will continue to lead them through a study of fungi, viruses and other diverse microorganisms.

Seventh Grade:

Art: 7th grade will be working on the final part of their sculptures in the coming classes. Next up is a painting and texture project. Please keep an eye on the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.  

Bible Huttenga: 7th graders have learned and discussed two crucial aspects of sermons: that they are Biblical and Authentic. Next week we will continue learning the vocabulary and meaning behind the other two terms: Contextual and Life-Changing. A quiz on the material will be coming after CEA conventions. 

Bible Meyaard: We have just recently started our prayer unit and have been discussing what the purpose of prayer is, the “rules” of prayer, and different ways in the Bible where prayer is used. We look forward to continuing to dig deeper in prayer over the next several weeks. 

History: We are enjoying learning about all the different climate zones around the world. Next week we will start wrapping up this unit and look forward to a test the following week.

Language Arts: 7th graders must have a draft of their Organism Monologue ready to be submitted by Monday at the beginning of class - they will conduct a peer review. On Tuesday, students will take a quiz about Elements of Plot and Conflict in literature. Because of the short week, we will not be having a spelling quiz, but the Reading Inventory is still due. 

Math - Algebra: We will be concluding chapter 2, inequalities, with a test on Tuesday of all we have learned. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We will review and take a Chapter 3 test on Tuesday.

Music - Band: We are getting our solos ready. Ask for a concert - they need to really get the songs down NOW so that when Nov 12 comes they can just play and enjoy with confidence!

Music - Choir: We are attempting to play chimes, boomwhackers and other things….and are also singing in three parts. Go us!

Science: We have been studying producers and the key role they play in our lives. Today we burned food to see how many calories were in it. Next week we will be discussing the results of the producer lab students wrote and wrapping up our understanding of producers.

Art: 8th graders are in the very beginning stages of working on their ceramics project. Ask your 8th grader what design ideas they have for their ceramic pot and what textures they will be adding to the pot they build. Please keep an eye on the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.  

BibleHutt: Students will conclude the unit on The Last Battle when they submit their Narnia & Reformation posters at the end of class on Tuesday, October 22. When we return from CEA, students will begin exploring major objections to/apologetics of the Christian faith in Lee Strobel’s The Case for Faith.  

BibleVN: We are reading The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. 

History: Next week we will put the finishing touches on our chapter on the American Revolution. We will have a test on Chapter 6 early the following week.

Language Arts: 8th graders are tightening up their thesis statements for NHD. They are also doing the tedious (but essential!) work of making sure all of their research is consistently represented through the essay by way of parenthetical citations. This is not easy work, but it will pay off in dividends come December. Students have also been introduced to the Literature Critique Letter assignments - we haven’t begun them yet, but they now have specific directives for the Reading Zone and will need to critically assess the novels they’ve completed already. Because of the short week, we will not be having a spelling quiz, but the Reading Inventory is still due. 

Math - Algebra: We will be concluding chapter 2, inequalities, with a test on Tuesday of all we have learned. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We will be taking a test on Chapter 3 this coming Tuesday.

Music - Band: Band festival is Nov 12. Practice is essential - Oct is more than half over. Go band! We need black and white for Nov 12. 

Music - Choir: We are attempting to play chimes, boomwhackers and other things….and are also singing in three parts. Go us!

Science: We spent some time this week investigating craters on the moon. Next week we will further discuss our results and look into how scientists believe the moon was formed.
