Food Drive: In connection with our chapel on Tuesday, we will hold a food drive to give our students the opportunity to use their blessings to bless those in need. We hope that they will see how even a seemingly small act can be a big blessing to others! Students will bring home a flyer today with specific items needed at Baxter Community Center.

Fifth Grade:
Chapel: The fifth and sixth graders will lead chapel on Tuesday, Nov 26 at 8:15 in the north gym. We would love for you to come and worship with us. Also, students have special things to wear and bring for that chapel. Please remind them! Thanks.
Water Donation: The 5th grade is raising money to help build wells for clean water around the world. Students were told that they shouldn’t just ask parents for money, but should find creative ways to collect money and practice being generous with the gifts they’ve been given.
Christmas Auction: Our Christmas Auction will take place right before Christmas break. If you have any items at home (toys, games, balls, coloring books, fun pillows, blankets, etc) that you don’t want anymore, but think a 5th grader would enjoy, we love donations! Please bring items to your child’s homeroom teacher. Thanks for your help!
Art: 5th grade continues to work on printmaking. Exciting things are happening.
Bible: This week we spent time reflecting on hunger around the world by participating in Rice Week and looking into statistics on world hunger.
History: Students have been “sailing the high seas” on a simulated voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. We have been learning about problem solving, seafaring, navigation, and more!
Language Arts: We continue to read and discuss A Long Walk to Water.
Math: We finished our chapter on division with two-digit divisors. We have started the next chapter on adding and subtracting decimals.
Music - Band: Concert on Dec 12 - we are working on concert music and also our method books - please ask for concerts often - encourage practice! Ask your student to show you Music Racer - up to 20 minutes of this could count as practice this week if they show you!
Music - Choir: Concert on Dec 12 - we are working on our music and are excited to sing for you!
Music - Orchestra: We are working on concert music for Dec 12!
PE: Students just finished an indoor soccer unit and have started a volleyball unit. Currently we are focusing on gaining some of the necessary skills to play volleyball and hopefully will be able to apply skills to a game-setting after thanksgiving.
Science: We are continuing our unit on systems! We have been focusing on systems in plants and then we will shift our focus to systems in humans.
Spanish: We just finished our third unit called The Boy Who Liked Fish. Students took a short quiz on this unit and we ended the week with a Thanksgiving “comecoco.”
Sixth Grade:
Student iPads coming home: Beginning Mon, Dec 02, students will bring their school iPad home with them each night. We have some information and suggestions to share with you before this happens. Please review this information and talk with your student before Dec 02.

Devotion Sign-up: Sign up to lead devotions for our 6th Graders on a Thursday (8:00-8:10am) this school year. We love to have parents and guests come to share a story, song, verse, prayer or devotional with us!

Art: 6th grade students are working on drawing self-portraits and taking notes on how to draw a portrait properly. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible: This week we began looking at ancient Rome in order to better understand the culture and context of the early church. After Christmas break we will be journeying with Paul throughout the Mediterranean.
History: Students created cuneiform tablets this week. Next, they will study various Sumerian inventions.
Language Arts: Students did well on the test this week. We hope to finish our class novel soon and move into our Disability (Different Ability) Awareness Unit after Thanksgiving. In this unit, students will read books/articles, watch videos, listen to speakers, conduct research, experience disability stations/and a disability for a day, gain awareness about obstacles/difficulties, create projects, and participate in many valuable discussions about people with disABILITIES or different abilities. This unit is memorable and impactful.
Math: We have been learning about unit rate and unit price. The students found the unit price of items around the room just like they would in a grocery store. We found unit prices for things such as the cost per ounce of a large bag of m&m’s compared to a small bag of m&m’s. We were amazed at how much we can save per ounce by buying in bulk!
Music - Band: New method books coming soon - we are almost done with our current book and we will celebrate and get a new book soon, go us! Concert coming Dec 12 - lots of great work is being done.
Music - Choir: Wait until you hear your 6th graders sing Dec 12! So fun!
Music - Orchestra: 6th grade string players are sounding terrific on their concert music so continue to work on getting all of the notes in tune for Dec 12!
PE: Students just finished an indoor soccer unit and have started a volleyball unit. Currently we are focusing on gaining some of the necessary skills to play volleyball and hopefully will be able to apply skills to a game-setting after thanksgiving.
Science: Friday’s science test marks the end of our Diversity of Life unit and the beginning of our Electromagnetic Force unit!
Spanish: Test on Monday. This test covers our mini-unit on colors, clothing, and the phrase: I like it. Please see Moodle if you would like more information. Students are encouraged to study by bringing home their green Spanish folders.
Seventh Grade:
Art: 7th grade students are learning about Julian Opie and graphic design in preparation for the next project in art. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible Huttenga: 7th graders continue studying the effects of gratitude as well as ways to express it. We are working on a project that must remain secret for a time.
Bible Meyaard: We are continuing to look at prayer throughout the Bible. Specifically, we have been looking at different stories where individuals have to rely on prayer. Examples of these stories are: the story of Daniel in the Lions Den, Hannah’s story, and Elijah’s story in 1 Kings.
History: We have spent the past week looking at different environmental issues and studying their causes, effects, and possible solutions. Students are now starting a research project on one particular issue where they will need to create a report and a fake social media campaign to raise awareness and action on their environmental issue.
Language Arts: As we begin T2, students will be required to dig deeper into literature every week when they fill out their Reading Inventories. Students will keep track of and discuss elements of effective or ineffective writing they see in the books they choose to read. They will begin micro-conferencing with Mr. Huttenga to discuss and analyze these findings. We are nearly done with The Witch of Blackbird Pond.
Math - Algebra: We are working on writing linear equations. We will have a quiz on Monday on 4.1-4.3.
Math - Pre-Algebra: We started chapter 5 this week on ratios, rates, and proportions.
Music - Band: Concert Dec 12 - we are working hard on Christmas music. It’s fun to hear and experience - we can’t wait to show you!
Music - Choir: We sing in 3 parts - go us! We will show you on Dec 12.
Music - Orchestra: Our concert is December 12 and we are playing some beautiful pieces!

Additionally, students have set fitness goals and strategies to try to achieve them by then of the school year.
Science: Our study of Populations and Ecosystems will conclude on Monday with a open-note test focusing heavily on investigations 6-8, but covering the big ideas of all this whole year. Tuesday we will start with our next investigation of Chemical Interactions!
Spanish: This week we created and acted out a silly story about a kind friend who gave much to her three friends...or did she? We also took a grammar look at adjective agreement in Spanish.
Eighth Grade:
Yearbook Pictures and Baby Pictures:
If you would have not yet submitted your child's yearbook or baby photo please do so by the end of November (gro.naitsirhcada@nanahcubd) . Pictures should be vertical in orientation and mostly a “head and shoulders” or “waist up” style picture.
For the Baby Picture, you may submit those either as digital images or as printed photos. Please email the images to Dani Buchanan at dbuchanan@adachristian.org.
GRCHS SHOWCASE 2020!
8th Graders & Their Parents are invited to the Grand Rapids Christian High School Showcase 2020 Tuesday, Dec 03, at 7:00pm! See how a Christ-centered, student-focused approach to learning has made us one of West Michigan's top-performing high schools and such a good fit for so many students!
The evening will include an introduction to Grand Rapids Christian High School and over 20 breakout sessions designed to help you learn more about our academic programs, athletics, fine arts, Winterim Program, and much more.
You will also have the opportunity to meet members of our staff and hear how they encourage our students in their spiritual journey. Art: 8th grade students continue their work on building their ceramic pots. Students have 3 class periods or 135 minutes to complete this part of the project. Most students are working on creating lids, handles, and texture. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
BibleHutt: Students are discussing the practice of Reformation now that they’ve had a briefing on its history with Martin Luther. In the coming classes we will be discussing our school theme in-depth. There will be a quiz after Thanksgiving break.
BibleVN: We will begin T2 with a project to bless others, we will think a little about technology use, we will memorize some scripture, and then we will begin to study the gospels.
History: This past week we learned about our Bill of Rights and had fun applying them to different scenarios. We are now learning about the U.S. Constitution focusing on the principles of the Constitution and the powers and responsibilities it gives to the three main branches of government.
Language Arts: As we begin T2, students will be required to dig deeper into literature every week when they fill out their Reading Inventories. Students will keep track of and discuss elements of effective or ineffective writing they see in the books they choose to read. They will begin micro-conferencing with Mr. Huttenga to discuss and analyze these findings. Students should make sure they have parenthetical citations in order, and a first draft of their essay will be due the Friday after Thanksgiving break. After the break we will also begin our novel study of The Giver.
Math - Algebra: We are working on writing linear equations. We will have a quiz on Monday on 4.1-4.3.
Math - Pre-Algebra: We are starting chapter 5 focusing on ratios, rates, and proportions.
Music - Band: 8th Grade Band has a special Christmas field trip Dec 05. Details in your parent emails this next week. Christmas Concert Dec 12 - we are working on some really great music.
Music - Choir: Concert Dec 12. We will also be listening to some great music during class, including music of Ravel and Holst just to name two.
Music - Orchestra: 8th grade Ensemble will perform some beautiful pieces for the Dec 12 concert !
