Stuff-a-Bus

Nov 17-23 we will be stuffing a bus again, this time in partnership with Degage Ministries. Please watch this video and encourage your students to participate.

5th Grade

Rice Week (Nov 15-19): Please send your child to school with a bowl and spoon every day next week. We are asking that students only bring fruits, vegetables, water, and milk to school. Teachers will provide rice, as well as condiments at lunch time. Students may eat as much rice as they’d like. If you do not want your child to participate in this simulation, please contact Ms. Gerig. Thank you to all of our volunteers! Please check this list for the times you signed up for.

Water Walk (Nov 23): Your child will need an empty milk jug for this walk. Please think ahead so your child is prepared. Your child needs to bring a sack lunch this day as well.

Art: 5th graders have started transitioning onto cutting their drawn designs out of the block material. All students should be cutting their designs by the end of next week. The key to being successful in this step is slow and steady. 

Bible: This week we learned about hunger around the world to set us up for Rice Week next week. We also learned a bit about Mission India - an organization we will be partnering with through SEED Market (more details to come). Students were able to watch virtual reality videos of India and children’s Bible clubs that have had an impact on many families in India. The next justice verse is due Fri, Nov 19.

Language Arts: This week we started reading A Long Walk to Water. Students are also picking out their own independent reading books for our Global Awareness unit. Next week we will continue reading A Long Walk to Water!

Math: This past week we continued to practice dividing by two and three-digit divisors. Dividing with greater numbers can be time consuming, but the steps remain the same! There is a TEST next week Tuesday. The review sheet can be found on google classroom or in the pink packet. 

Music - Band: Christmas Concert Dec 09. Wear - Theme T shirt on top and black or khakis on the bottom. God’s Promises - - - and Christmas!! 5th plays at 6:00pm. All band assignments are on Google Classroom.

Music - Choir: Wonderful It is Well projects  -  - - SO GREAT….check your email for a happy message from Mrs. VN.

Music - Orchestra: Keep filling out your practice records! The Christmas Concert is Dec 09. For attire, please wear your theme T-shirt on top and black or khakis on the bottom. The 5th graders will play at 6:00pm.

PE: We have been working on our volleyball skills the past week and have been applying these skills to volleyball style games.

Science: This week the students were hard at work working on a Solar System scale model. Students scaled down the actual size of the universe, and created it on long pieces of paper. Students did a great job with this project! Next week we will be looking at the Water Cycle. 

Social Studies: Students completed a shape poem displaying their understanding of the Pacific Northwest region. Next week, they will finish their ABC poem for the Arctic region and consider how the location of the Great Plains affected peoples’ sources of food, shelter, clothing and traditions.

Spanish: Students presented their Nouns and Articles Projects in class this week.  What a great way to combine God’s created nature and Spanish! Well done 5th graders!

6th Grade

Art: 6th graders will be completing part two of the portrait project next week. Ask your 6th grader how this portrait is different. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates. 

Bible: This week we learned about the characteristics prayerful and humility. Students put these characteristics into practice through prayer stations and a humility reflection.

Language Arts: This week students continued working on their Tuck Everlasting Character Projects. They researched characters, wrote poems, and started working on writing diary entries in the perspective of their chosen characters. They also took the Tuck Everlasting test on Thursday. Next week we will continue working on our projects.

Math: The students took a test this past week on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions. Miss Leah also came in on Thursday to discuss with us the business portion of Got Yolk! We have just started our new chapter on Ratios and Rates - there will be two quizzes next week.

Music - Choir: Veteran’s Day/Armistice Day - all the military songs….and the Edmund Fitzgerald…Lots of history and music this week.

PE: We have been working on our volleyball skills the past week and have been applying these skills to volleyball style games.

Science: This week students finished and presented their projects on extreme weather. We have moved to studying the Earth’s layers of the atmosphere. Students are currently designing vehicles that can take them through the layers of the atmosphere. 

Social Studies: Students interviewed King Hammurabi, learned about Hammurabi’s Code, and started a project on the advances of technology in Mesopotamia. This project is due next week. We will also be taking a test on Fri, Nov 19, to wrap up our ancient Mesopotamia unit.

Spanish: Students cleared out their Spanish folder of all their Unit 1-2 materials and were instructed to take it home in their binders. Hopefully these materials made it to parents at home!  This would include their last test.  

7th Grade

Art: Next week in class 7th grade students will be learning about color through some pretty groovy songs and students will also work to complete sculpting, smoothing, and gessoing their sculptures in preparation for painting. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates. 

Bible: We are starting our devotions unit. Students are learning about devotions and why we do them. We will begin looking into different kinds of devotions and practicing them in the coming weeks.

History: We are concluding our brief look at the Age of Jackson as we focus on how this first “common man” president was controversial--especially in his seizing of Native American land. Next week we’ll begin our study of Westward Expansion.

Language Arts: We will continue our study of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and start exploring how to respond to each other’s work in directed discussion. We will continue exploring sentence structure and also learn how to fix fragments, run-ons, and common capitalization mistakes.

Math - 7th Math: We are learning about rational numbers: how to compare, order, and operate with fractions and decimals. Next week Tuesday we will have a quiz covering our first four lessons.

Math - Algebra: In Algebra we will begin chapter 4. In this chapter we will begin to learn how to write different linear equations like slope-intercept form, point-slope form and parallel and perpendicular lines. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: Pre-Algebra students are working through Chapter 5 on Ratios and Proportions. Expect a quiz on Tuesday or Wednesday. We are getting to a point where students are needing organization in homework papers and it would be good for them to have their notes out with them while they are completing homework.

Music - Band: Solo day is Tuesday Nov 16. White and black wear for the event or a very dressy outfit that day! All Solo checklists are due that day. Here is the schedule/location for each event for Solo Day. Parents are welcome to come watch their student perform!!!! Next up is Christmas! Concert 7:00pm Dec 9. Wear White and Black. 

Music - Orchestra: Solo and Ensemble is this Tuesday! Please make sure that your student is practicing and ready to go for their performance. Please wear white on top (no writing, preferred white button-down for boys) and black on bottoms.

Science: This upcoming week we will be finishing up our Chemical Interactions study learning about balancing equations and how that shows what we see in a chemical reaction. 

Spanish: This week we took a couple days to discuss grammar - something we rarely do.  We specifically looked at Subject pronouns and how they affect the verbs they precede.  Next week, we start Unit 7.

8th Grade

Yearbook Pictures and Baby Pictures: Reminder Yearbook and Baby Pictures are due Dec 01, 2021. Picture dimensions and details. 

Butter Braids: Thursday, November 18 butter braids will be delivered. It is important that they are stored in the freezer as soon as possible. Students will be bringing their orders home that day - plan accordingly for storage and transportation on that day!

Art: 8th grade students are all working on creating lids and integrated/themed handles for their ceramic pots they have constructed. We are shooting to have these pots built and drying by Thanksgiving break. Also, encourage your students to be learning and reviewing the ceramic terms. The terms to learn are posted on the art google classroom. There will be a quiz on the ceramic terms after we are done building our vessels. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook assignments due dates. 

Bible VanNoord: Memory work each Friday - this week was about always being able to give a reason for the hope we have. 1 Peter 3:15-16….Also finishing up The Case For Christ by reading the book and watching part of the movie too.

Bible Schaefer: We are close to finishing The Case For Christ book and will be watching the movie soon. The questions we have engaged with this week are, is there a case for Christ outside of the Bible? Did Jesus fake his death? What happened to the body? Our memory verse this Friday was about always being able to give a reason for the hope we have (1 Peter 3:15).

History: We spent the week looking at slavery in the South in the first half of the 1800s--both the life of slaves and their culture and how it helped them survive. Next week we’ll look at how people defended slavery and the abolitionist movement before ending with a test over the development of the Cotton Kingdom in the South (either Friday or the following Monday).

Language Arts: This will be our last full week of class for students to work on their NHD outlines - they are due on the final day before Thanksgiving Break.  We will continue our study of The Giver. We will continue learning about clauses, sentence structure, and also consider the rules of quotations - for dialogue as well as the incorporation of direct quotes for the NHD essay. 

Math - Geometry: In Geometry we are jumping into a fun chapter. We will be learning everything we need to know about congruent triangles. Once we are comfortable with congruent triangles and their properties we will begin to write more proofs.

Math - Pre-Algebra: Pre-Algebra students are working through Chapter 5 on Ratios and Proportions. Expect a quiz on Tuesday or Wednesday. We are getting to a point where students are needing organization in homework papers and it would be good for them to have their notes out with them while they are completing homework.

Music - Band: Festival day is Tuesday Nov 16. White and black wear for the event or a very dressy black/white outfit that day! Next up is Christmas! Concert 7:30pm Dec 9. Wear White and Black. 

Music - Choir: Auditions are Wed Nov 17 and Fri Nov 19, usually done by about 4:30 at the latest.

Music - Orchestra: Solo and Ensemble is this Tuesday! Please make sure that your student is practicing and ready to go for their ensemble performance. Please wear white on top (no writing, preferred white button-down for boys) and black on bottoms.

Science: We are finishing up our study of planetary science with learning about the solar system, planets, and stars. 

Spanish: This week we discussed Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday celebrated in November.  We learned about the holiday and discussed the “good” (redeemed), the “bad”(broken) and how to approach this holiday as Christians.
