Middle School Matters

General Announcements

Dates:

5th Grade

Gospel Theatre:  Gospel Theatre and the End of Year Celebration are taking place June 4, 1:30-3:00pm in the North Gym. Please complete this survey so we can know how many people to plan for. You should complete the survey for each parent attending.

Auction: The end of year auction is June 9. We are looking for donations - these can be used items from around the house that you no longer want or need (sports balls, Nerf hoops, purses, stuffed animals, etc). If you wish to donate items to our auction, please send your child with the items to give to his/her homeroom teacher. 

History: Next week we will continue learning about the U.S. Constitution!

Language Arts: Next week we will continue reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We are almost to the end!

Music - Band: What a great concert your 5th graders played - -  WOW WOW WOW!!!! Summer is a great time to develop even more musical skills! Knollcrest Music Camp is a day camp they are eligible to attend because they have learned enough to join 6th graders from other schools quite easily. There is band, choir, jazz, music theatre, handbells (usually I help with the bells) and many other activities as well!

Music - Choir: We can sing SO many songs…..and drum….and we continue to work on rhythm and notation/reading/interpretation. Yay!

Music - Orchestra: You did such an amazing job in the concert this week. I am so proud of all your hard work and dedication. The last practice record is due next week. Keep up the good work!

Science: Students completed their plant/pollinator unit with some amazing projects! We will focus on a few different human body systems in the last few weeks of school. First up will be the circulatory system.

6th Grade

End-of-Year Auction: 6th Graders have earned and saved MANY auction points this year. Our End-of-Year auction will take place on June 9 and we are looking for donations. These donations can be gently-used items from around the house that you no longer want/need (stickers, sports balls, Nerf hoops, purses, stuffed animals, etc), individually-wrapped candy or snacks or new items that you think 6th graders would be excited about. If you wish to donate items, please send them in with your student and let your child’s homeroom teacher know to expect them. Thank you in advance!

History: The sixth-graders wrapped up their ancient Rome unit with a test. Next week they will begin learning about the cultures of Medieval Europe.

Language Arts: This week we continued to read The Wednesday Wars. We also started brainstorming and planning persuasive essays. Towards the end of the week, we worked on pages that will be bound together to make a OE chicken chore book. Next week we will continue reading Wednesday Wars and working on our essays!

Music - Band: What a great concert your 6th graders played - -  WOW WOW WOW!!!! Summer is a great time to develop even more musical skills! Knollcrest Music Camp is a great summer day camp during August - - it’s super fun. I will be there, too! I’d love to see ACS kids there! Band, Jazz Band, Choir, Music Theatre, Orchestra, Handbells - it’s a great camp!

Music - Choir: We finished presenting our Sound of Music Projects this week, and sang a bunch too!

Music - Orchestra: You did such an amazing job in the concert this week. I am so proud of all your hard work and dedication.

Science: We swabbed different locations for bacteria this week. We will be observing them as they grow this coming week.

7th Grade

Bible: We are wrapping up our unit on the walk of Jesus. When we will finish up the unit with a final project where students will reflect on their experience learning about Jesus.

History: We continue our project on becoming a colonist. We’ve arrived in the New World, are living in our new homes, and are learning about being a part of colonial society. Next week we look at social classes, education, and slavery. 

Language Arts: We have finished solving the mystery behind The Westing Game, and we are now fully diving into writing our ProCon essay.

Math - 7th Math: Students should expect a test on probability this Tuesday before we begin our last unit together on statistics. 

Math - Algebra: We will spend time reviewing key concepts that we have studied throughout the course. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: Our chapter 11 test was pushed back so we will complete it on Monday May, 24. We will then start our last chapter of the year on Surface area and Volume - this unit will be concluded with a project in place of a test.

Music - Choir: We listened to more classical music, learned more about change-ringing, and are starting to learn some new songs to sing as well.

Science: We are looking at bonds- covalent and ionic at the atomic level. Next week we will compare a covalent compound to an ionic com

8th Grade

Device Intention Form: We need all parents to complete the Device Intention Form by May 28 indicating if your family would like to purchase your student’s device or return it to ACS. 

Graduation: 8th graders should have a packed bag with change of clothes and go to Hedlunds’ immediately following the graduation ceremony. 

Bible: We will be concluding our Plumb-Bobs on Monday, and the Bible exam essay/reflection is due Tuesday, May 25

History: We’ve finished studying the Civil War. The rest of our time is focused on preparing for the exam on Wednesday (8 Homans) or Thursday (8 Huttenga). The exam covers material from the Constitution through the Civil War. Exam review and essay questions are on Google Classroom. 

Language Arts: We have officially finished Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, and we are now devoting our remaining class time to preparing for the Language Arts exam. The guide, questions, strategies, and study checklist are all available on Google Classroom. 

Math - Algebra: We have finished our chapter on quadratic equations. We will review next week Monday and Tuesday for our exam that will be Wednesday morning. 

Math - Geometry: We will spend our time reviewing for the exam that will be on Wednesday morning. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We finished our very last unit on probability!  Next week Monday and Tuesday will be spent reviewing for the exam that will take place on Wednesday. 

Music - Band: Thank you so much for sharing your 8th graders with us! What a great concert they played. School instruments should all be turned in by Tues May 25. May God bless you and keep you all!

Music - Choir: We finished the Fiddler Test as a family and they did great. We also sang the graduation song through a few more times. :)

Music - Orchestra: You did such an amazing job in the concert this week. I am so proud of all your hard work and dedication. If you rented from ACS be sure to turn your instrument in by Tuesday, May 25. It was an honor being your teacher this year. Blessings to you!

Science: We have just finished up our heredity unit. We will review Monday and Tuesday for our exam on Thursday. 

Athletics

All spring sports teams will finish their season by Sat, May 22. 

All 5-8 graders must have a Physical Examination Form completed before they can participate in sports for the 2021-2022 school year. This physical examination should be completed on or after Apr 15, 2021 to valid for next school year.
