Art: 5th graders are either working on completing their coil pots or learning about Modigliani and creating a Modigliani inspired self-portrait.

Band: Full Band Jan 30 and Feb 01! Bring all instruments both Tue and Thu!

Bible: 5S is finishing up their Pilgrim’s Progress reflections, which are due Tues Jan 30. The students received a packet for Bible memory. Each student must earn at least 20 points to receive an A. Bible memory will be the week before Spring Break.

Language Arts: This week and next week we are going to be taking our MAPS test. Along with this we will be reading our BOB books and organizing information for our nonprofit opinion writings. At this point we are 2 1/2 weeks into BOB and 5th graders should have around 20 reading tickets. Please sign those tickets and encourage your 5th grader to read at home!

Math: We began our chapter on Order of Operations and Expressions! Students are practicing using PEMDAS and writing numerical expressions. Make sure that your child is multiplying and dividing whatever operation comes first left to right, same goes for addition and subtraction. This is the most common mistake. For example, for 15 ÷ 3 x 5 ÷ 5 you would solve 15 ÷ 3 = 5. Then you solve 5 x 5 = 25. Lastly, 25 ÷ 5 = 5.

Orchestra: Full orchestra Tues and Thur Jan 30 and Feb 01.Everyone bring your instrument and music for both days!

PE: We will be playing Handball after Exploratory week!

Science: Solutions, concentration, saturation - all of these are a focus for our investigations this week. We are also welcoming a new face to our classroom this week! Ms. Kaitlin DeWindt is joining us as a teacher intern from Calvin College. Ms. DeWindt and Mrs. Westrate will be teaching together until mid-May.

Social Studies: Thomas Jeffereson, expansion west, Lewis and Clark….QUIZ tomorrow (Friday). They have their review sheet. Lewis and Clark simulation is going well - the race to the ocean is on!

Spanish: We are learning new vocabulary this week. We are using story telling, and individualized questions that repeat our vocabulary.
