Fifth Grade: 

Reproductive Education: As you have some extra time with your child over the coming months, please find an opportunity to discuss Reproductive Health. At the end of May, after Spring Camp, the 5th grade team plans to begin a short unit on Reproductive Education. Mrs. Gerig and Mrs. Reidsma will meet with the girls while Mr. Stepanek will meet with the boys. In addition to going over the physical aspects of puberty, we plan to include discussions on God’s design for our bodies and reproduction, as well as treating our bodies with dignity and respect. Please have a conversation with your child before we have this conversation at school. If any parent would like more information, let one of us know and we would be happy to talk with you. More detailed information will be sent out in the coming months.

Disinfectant Wipes Needed:We are still in need of disinfecting wipes in 5th grade. Would you be willing to send in a container next week? Thank you in advance.


Art: All 5th grade students will be learning about Mark Rothko and  working work with color to show emotions.

Bible: This week in Bible we wrapped up our study on the disciples and talked about the meaning of the anchor cross. Next up - miracles! Matthew 18:1-4 is due Fri., Jan. 31.

History: This week we learned about Spanish, English, French, and Dutch colonies. Next week we will celebrate our learning with a test. Students can use their study guide and social studies notebook to help them prepare. 

Language Arts: We continue to read for BOB! Students should have a weekly report in their mail today. Ticket turn in is every Thursday. Students must have an initial from a parent/teacher. Next week Thursday, the fifth graders will have a short quiz on the story elements/plot diagram.

Music - Band: Great work on the Good Life Solo - next up is 4 songs for full band - we will invite you to a mini concert during school in February - we can’t wait to show you our full group sound. Tentative date for the mini concert in Feb 24, late afternoon.

Music - Choir: We go to the symphony on Tuesday Feb 25 - we are listening to music and learning about symphony instruments, and also singing as well.

PE: This week students completed their first week of jump roping where their learn a variety of jumps. We will work on putting these skills to the test as students will have to perform a jump rope routine with small groups next week. 

Sixth Grade:

Disinfectant Wipes Needed: We are still in need of disinfecting wipes in 6th grade. Would you be willing to send in a container next week? Thank you in advance.


Art: The portrait project is due next week Jan 28 for 6W and Jan 30 for 6K and 6B. Student need to have their green watercolor video sheet completed for next weeks class so that they can start watercolor painting. Please check the homework calendar for homework and project due dates. 

Bible: This week students presented their early church symbols to the class. We also began our “Where’s Paul-Do?” simulation. Classes are racing each other to make it to then end of Paul’s missionary journeys first, learning about each stop along the way.

History: We learned about pyramids, mummification, and Egyptian inventions this week! Next week Friday is the last day students can take their African Map Quiz. They can use the link in Google Classroom or map in their social studies notebook to continue practicing. 

Language Arts: The 6th graders will continue to take the LA MAP test on Wednesday. We will also work to identify prepositions, prepositional phrases, and objects of the preposition in sentences. Students are working on an obstacle course and writing a poem using prepositions. In addition, we will review/practice citing evidence from the text in our reading. 

Music - Band: We continue to forge ahead in our band books; it’s amazing how fast we can learn. We are also doing a big theory review as well.

Music - Choir: Solfege, Sound of Music, Austria, Anschluss, Singing, Intervals...go us!

Seventh Grade:

Art: Students are working on the beginning stage of creating self-portraits as Lego Mini-figures Please check the homework calendar for homework and project due dates. 

Bible Huttenga: Students are now acquainted with the 4 qualities to look for in sermons, and we just finished taking notes on the first sermon from Ada Bible Church titled “The New You”. Next week we’ll be using the notes students jotted down to solidify our knowledge with concrete examples. Students will take a quiz either at the end of the week or the beginning of the week depending on how prepared they seem. 

Bible Meyaard: This week we briefly looked at different stories and times that Jesus prayed and what we can learn from him. Additionally, we learned about what it means to be a community. With this each student is welcoming a preschooler to the Ada Christian community by writing letters to them and praying for them over the next few weeks. 

History: We are working through a unit on Governments and Economic Systems. 

Language Arts: Normal assignments continue. We will be close to concluding The Westing Game. Students will be given a mid-trimester self-assessment to gauge how they are doing. 

Math - Algebra: We will have a test next week Thursday on Chapter 5- Linear Systems. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We have had a good week learning about probability. Next week we will start looking at how summarize and analyze data. On Thursday and Friday we will take the MAP Math test during class time.

Music - Band: We had a quiz on 117, we continue to work on theory and key signatures and dessert theatre music as well.

Music - Choir: We are almost done with our unit on Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

PE: This week students completed their first week of jump roping where their learn a variety of jumps. We will work on putting these skills to the test as students will have to perform a jump rope routine with small groups next week. 

Science: We continue to investigate chemical interactions. We are looking at the periodic table and atoms. Students will be working in pairs researching different families of the periodic table. 

Eighth Grade:

Art: 8th grade students are working to create their family portrait shapes out of cardboard. Please check the homework calendar for homework and project due dates. 

BibleHutt: We’ve begun our study of The Case for Faith by Lee Strobel. Please as your students about what they are learning! With each chapter covered, students will be responding to prompts on Google Classroom. They have been introduced to the final project of the course which won’t be due for a few weeks - an essay titled “My Articulation of Faith (So Far)”.

BibleVN: We are just beginning our Case for Christ Unit. (Book by Lee Strobel)

History: Next week will start looking at the impact of Andrew Jackson’s presidency. After that we will review and prepare for a test early the following week.

Language Arts: Next week we will be concluding The Giver. We have been discussing memory as a means of expression and relationship-building. We will explore how articulation of feelings, emotions, and experiences were essential in The Giver, and will segue into the first portion of the creative writing project “Book of Memories”, a collection of memoirs and other pieces the students will be working on.

Math - Algebra: We will have a test next week Thursday on Chapter 5- Linear Systems. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We have had a good week learning about probability. Next week we will start looking at how summarize and analyze data. On Thursday and Friday we will take the MAP Math test during class time.

Music - Band: We are working in our books and learning some new music. One of our pieces was recently played by a band at Iowa State University, we watched them on Youtube.

Music - Choir: We have begun a unit on Fiddler on the Roof. Tradition, Matchmaker and If I Were a Rich Man were great numbers we have heard so far. What is a Pogrom? A Mezuzah? Ask your 8th grader.

Science: We finished our unit on waves today. We will start Gravity and Kinetic Energy Unit next week.
