General Announcements:

Winter Olympics Are Coming To ACS: Every four years ACS joins with our nation and countries around the world in celebrating the Winter Olympics. This year the 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in PyeongChang, South Korea. The ACS Winter Olympics will take place on school grounds (only one event will be outside) from Mon Feb 05 to Thur Feb 08. Closing ceremonies will be held on Friday, Feb 09 in the South Gym. Students in grades 1 through 8 will be on a team which will participate in 2 events each day. Floor hockey, speed skating, curling, biathlon, bobsled and luge are just some of the events that will take place.

Parent Volunteers - The True Olympians: We will need 28 parent volunteers to help each day of the ACS Winter Olympics Feb 05-Feb 09. We need 14 parent volunteers to help with 5th through 8th grade events from 11:45am-1:15pm and another 14 parent volunteers to help with 1st through 4th grade events from 1:00-2:30pm. Please sign up to help!  We can't do it without you!

Fifth Grade:

From the library: If you are a Red Wings fan and want to encourage reading in your home, check out the reading program Red Wings for Reading. When your child reads three books recommended for their grade level, they can submit an online entry form. Every student who participates will receive a Red Wings for Reading Fan Pack and will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of Detroit Red Wings tickets to the March 31st, 2018 game. The program ends January 31 and is open to Kindergarten-5th grade students.


Art: 5th graders are working on creating coil pots much like the artist Maria Martinez.

Band: Wow - great learning is taking place! Thanks so much for encouraging your band student and helping them to find time to practice and hone their skills! And - ask to hear Star Wars!

Bible: Baptism sheet is due tomorrow (5HW). 3 Pilgrim’s Progress pictures are due Fri Jan 19 and 3 more on Mon Jan 22 (5S). 5S will be starting a Pilgrim’s Progress reflection writing this week. It has been fun hearing stories of baptisms and dedications this week.

Language Arts: Keep reading! We are in our second week of BOB and the momentum is strong. Our “Persuasion is All Around You” sheet is due tomorrow. This week we spent time talking about Persuasive Techniques and researching our nonprofit organization. Next week we will continue to organize and begin writing. We will begin our MAPS test next week Wed-Fri.

Math: We finished our unit on multiplying and dividing decimals with our chapter test. The 5th graders also took their MAP test and are starting a unit on expressions and order of operations.

Orchestra: This is such an awesome group of string players. Many are working on the 200 minutes of practice for the free tickets. Remember that you can get up to 4! This week Sat Jan 20 there are orchestra concerts at St.Cecilia beginning at 5PM AND 2 of our 8th graders are performing (one has a solo with the orchestra!)

PE: We have really enjoyed learning and playing Speedball this week. We will be playing Castle Football next week!

Science: We will have a test over investigations 1 and 2 on Wed 01.24 (5S) and Thur 01.25 (5HW). A review guide was given in class.

Social Studies: We are studying the expansion of the America to the west. Our simulation event is based on the journey of Lewis and Clark. Love looking back in the time with the kids. Understand the past….is understanding better who they are!

Spanish: This week’s class story included some interesting characters who perhaps didn’t have the best voice, but found favor with the President! Look for more fun stories next week.

Sixth Grade:

Art: 6th grade has begun exploring watercolor painting. Student will be experimenting with watercolor techniques for the next color of weeks. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.

Band: We are in the new books - working hard and doing a great job. Go team! Does your student need more challenge? They are welcome to work as far into this book as they like. Want even more challenge? Private lessons are great. Email Mrs. VN for info.

Bible: This week was note-taking week as we nailed down some interesting facts about the Bible as a Book. We also used some of our time to do MAP testing. NEXT WEEK THURSDAY: the Books of the Bible memory work is due!

History: We are wrapping up our ancient Egypt unit with a test next Fri Jan 26 and an Egypt Glogster Project due Fri Feb 09. Look for an email with further details on the project--students received a packet this week with instructions and all project resources are posted on Moodle.

Language Arts: We are reading many short stories. There will be a quiz next week Friday on the elements of a short story. Also, keep an eye out for an upcoming reading challenge!

Math: Equations! Students must show each step on both sides of the equation to keep things balanced. Also on Monday and Tuesday students will be taking the 2nd MAP test this year.

PE: We have been playing Flag Football this week. We will learn how to play a fun new game called Speedball next week!

Orchestra: We are studying flats in scales and songs and are also playing new sheet music!

Science: We’ve been studying electricity and electromagnets this week. An open resource quiz will take place on Thu 01.25. Our next unit is Weather & Water.

Spanish: This week’s story was about Dwayne Johnson...who knew he spoke Elvish?!? Students enjoyed adding their own twists and turns to the plot. We topped it off by using our story with a language dictating game in the gym.

Seventh Grade:

Algebra (7th): We will continue to work with exponential functions. No tests this week.

Art: 7th graders will be working on creating and drawing a self-portrait as if they were a Lego mini-figure. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.

Band: We are learning music from the Olympics - this is an Olympic year!

Bible(Wanner): Wrapping up our study of prayer. A.C.T.S. prayer are due Friday and must be added to the bottom of the devotional written earlier this school year.

History: Next week we will continue to study the history of Africa. One interesting topic that we will specifically look at is the story of apartheid in South Africa.

PE: We have been playing Speedball this week. We will be playing Flag Football next week!

Math: We will begin learning about equations!

Pre-Algebra: Simplifying Expressions.  We will also take a break from expressions for our MAP test this week.

Orchestra: We are learning many new pieces Overtures, Symphonies and Star Wars! Be sure to get down to St.Cecilia Music Building this Sat, Jan 20 to hear 2 of our 8th graders and a 7th grader as well perform with one of the orchestras.

Science: We will continue to investigate particles and energy and begin to investigate thermos engineering and insulation. No tests this week.

Eighth Grade:

Dessert Theatre is underway. Our website is: www.adachristian.org/lionking or just go to the ACS website and type Lion King into the search bar. Rehearsal schedule is at this website and will also show up on Moodle for the students as well.


Algebra: We are working through a new chapter focusing on exponents.

Art: 8th graders are working on plaster their family shape projects. Plaster should be completed next week. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.

Band: We have a lot of music in our folders and are playing a number of different genres.

Bible(Van Noord): Matthew was great. We learned about a Christian athlete this week, one of Metaxes’ Seven Men: Eric Liddell. Next up Mark and then the Case for Christ.

Geometry: We will continue to study right triangles and area. Test later in the week.

History: We will be taking a test on Chapter 11 on Monday. Later in the week we will start our study of the Age of Reform from chapter 12.

Orchestra: We are working on lots of new pieces: Small Overture, Symphonia and Star Wars. Be sure to go to the St Cecilia orchestra concerts this Sat Jan 20 5:00pm to hear several of our middle school string players perform (one has a solo with the orchestra!)

Science: We will wrap up our investigation on Kinetic energy and gravity. We will be working through our “egg drop” challenge, students may need to bring in materials to help their group build their egg protection device. The egg drop is currently scheduled for Thurs.

Spanish: We are story creating in class this week! There will be a girlfriend-stealing brother and celebrity appearances.  

Athletics:

56 Basketball: 5th and 6th grade basketball tournament schedules have all been finalized. You can find the tournament schedules on the GRACEAC website.
