Planning for Exploratory Week
Do you know anyone who runs a restaurant, loves to cook, or loves to bake that may be interested in teaching a group of 12 students for a couple of hours?
Do you know someone who loves to sew, or other crafting activities, and may be interested in teaching a small group of MS students?
Mr. Witte is looking for some connections in these areas to help finalize some activities for Exploratory Week in February. If you can help, please email Mr. Witte (gro.naitirhcada@ettiwh) with a name and contact information. Thank you!
Fifth Grade:
PowerSchool Grade Access: On Wed, Jan 15, all 5th grade students learned how to view grades in real time on PowerSchool. Please read this important parent letter about using PowerSchool access to grades. 5th grade students and parents can now view grades on PowerSchool.
Disinfectant Wipes Needed: It is cold and flu season! To help prevent the spread of sickness, we faithfully clean desks and counters with disinfectant wipes. However, we are currently out of them. Would you be willing to send in one or two containers? Thanks!
Art: 5R is learning about and being inspired by the artist Mark Rothko. 5S and 5G are working on coil pottery.
History: This week students took the reading MAP test in social studies. Next week we will continue our study of the 1st colonies.
Language Arts: These 5th graders are reading machines! I am very proud of them. Thanks for your encouragement at home and for signing the reading tickets.Thursdays are ticket turn-in days. Next week we will continue our reading and reviewing of the elements of a story. We will also take the LA MAPS tests.
Math: We have just finished our unit on Multiplying and Dividing Decimals. We are going to begin Expressions and Patterns next week. Note: Your 5th grader was given a letter this week in math class. Please fill out this letter and have them turn it in next week.
Music - Band: We all have a full page solo we can play - The Good Life! It truly is a good life in band!! Ask for a concert every week - we are learning so quickly.
Music - Choir: We are illustrating the Firebird, singing songs and will study more music from the upcoming Symphony concert we will attend on Feb 27.
Music - Orchestra: We are learning how to slur notes together on one bow stroke- Numbers 94 through 100! We are also learning new songs on sheet music! Ask to hear First Scale March!
PE: We just finished up our floor hockey tournament this week. We will be starting up a jump rope unit next week which will be a different/fun activity for most students.
Science: We are learning about the Circulatory and Respiratory system! On Wednesday, we did an experiment to measure our lung capacity!
Sixth Grade:

Art: 6th graders are working to complete the portrait project, due Jan 28 for 6W and Jan 30 for 6K and 6B. Additionally, students should be working on watching watercolor technique videos via the art moodle page and taking notes on how to do each technique. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
History: This week students took the reading MAP test in social studies. Next week we will continue our study of ancient Egypt.
Language Arts: We are working on the parts of speech, specifically prepositions. Next week we will take the LA MAPS tests.
Math: We are finishing up our section on Integers. This can be difficult with all the adding, subtracting, negatives, and positives. The students have been working hard and doing well. There will be a quiz next week Tuesday. We will also begin Expressions next week. Note: Your 6th grader was given a letter this week in math class. Please fill out this letter and have them turn it in next week.
Music - Band: We celebrated the completion of a band book, and now we have two band books. Thank you for helping us to celebrate! Encourage practice at home and thank you!
Music - Choir: We are watching The Sound of Music, and learning loads of songs too, along with some solfege.
Music - Orchestra: We are working to complete all of the songs, duets and scales in Muller Rusch Book 2!

Science: We are learning about motors and generators! We spent some time exploring the technology in electric cars and looking at the pros/cons of using an electric car.
Seventh Grade:
Art: 7th graders are transitioning to working with proportions and non-traditional proportions. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
Bible Meyaard: We have begun to take a look at the reasons of prayer and different ways that people have prayed in the Bible. Next week, we will look at some stories of Jesus praying.
History: Next week we will continue learning about some different government systems and then we will start looking at different economic systems. On Thursday and Friday we will take time during history class to take the MAP Reading test.
Math - 7th Math: We continue to solve many equations & inequalities. Most students are doing amazing at showing their steps and keeping the equations and inequalities balanced.
Math - Algebra: We continue to work through linear systems. We will have MAPs testing on Tues, Jan 21.
Math - Pre-Algebra: Next week we will start a new unit on probability.
Music - Band: We are working on Dessert Theatre music. We will be performing during the dessert portion of the evening.
Music - Choir: We are watching Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. We also learned a little about avalanches and Pioneer Life in the 1850s.
Music - Orchestra: We are learning some great pieces for Dessert Theatre!
PE: We just finished up our floor hockey tournament this week. We will be starting up a jump rope unit next week which will be a different/fun activity for most students.
Science: We continue in our chemical interactions unit. We will begin talking about atoms and the periodic table next week.
Eighth Grade:
On Thurs, Feb 06 Lowell High School will have an orientation meeting for prospective high school students. The meeting will be held in the Lowell Performing Arts Center from 7:00-8:30pm. If you have questions please contact Nicole Deckrow (moc.sloohcsllewol@workceDN)
Art: 8th graders are working to complete the glazing of their ceramic pots. 8A pots must be glazed and ready for firing on Jan 22 and 8B pots must be glazed and ready for firing on Jan 28. Next students will be transitioning back to the family shape project. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
BibleVN: We finished Matthew and are almost done with Mark.
History: Next week we will be studying the War of 1812. On Thursday and Friday we will take time during history class to take the MAP Reading test.
Math - Algebra: We continue to work through linear systems. We will have MAPs testing on Tues, Jan 21.
Math - Geometry: Next week we will complete the winter MAP test and work properties of polygon and parallelograms.
Math - Pre-Algebra: Next week we will start a unit on probability.
Music - Band: We are playing a new march, other new sheet music, and are flying through the 8th grade band book.
Music - Choir: We are listening to Holst’s The Planets and Ravel’s Bolero and singing and playing and working on all sorts of chapel songs and musical songs.
Music - Orchestra: We have 4 new long pieces with segments in 2nd and 3rd position!

Science: This week we investigated color- additive and subtractive color. We made color wheels with Nilla wafers, frosting, and food dye. Next week we will be looking into refraction of light.
