Wildcats of the Month

Congratulations to our January Wildcats of the Month: Aspen Y., Lucy R., Eddie O., and Ava J.

Middle School Round Robin conferences - Come one, come all! 

All the 5th-8th grade teachers will be located in the ACS Gymnasiums on Tuesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 24 from 4:30-7:30pm. Parents are welcome to stop in at a convenient time of their choice during these time blocks in order to touch base with their child’s teacher(s) for a brief 3-5 minute conference. Simply join the line near the teacher(s) you would like to see. You are welcome to see any/all of your child’s 5-8 teachers. 

Exploratory Help

Do you love to bake or cook? Would you be willing to share your talents with a group of middle school students during exploratory week? We are looking for a parent to come in and lead our students Tuesday, February 22, 1:15-3:00pm. If you are willing or would like more info please contact Denice Burgess. 616-481-1541 or

5th Grade

SEED Market: Thank you for all of your hard work! This year we raised $4,395.15 which is our best year yet! How amazing that we get to be a blessing to our global brothers and sisters by donating to World Vision and Mission India.

Valentine’s Day is Monday, Feb 14. If you would like to send a treat or Valentines, please plan to send enough for your child’s entire homeroom. 

Art: We will try again this coming week to wrap up the printmaking project by mounting our best prints. 

Bible: This week in Bible students learned about Jesus’ miracle of healing the demon-possessed man. Students rewrote the story from a different perspective. Ask your child to share their story with you! Matthew 5:3-12 is due Fri., Mar. 4.

Language Arts: This week we took the LA MAP test. We also completed Week 5 of BOB! Our last day of BOB is Wed, Feb. 16, so we have just a little under two weeks to complete our reading goals. If your student will be absent the last day of BOB, s/he will need to turn in their final tickets ahead of time, and your student will need to make sure all quiz scores are posted on his/her Google Slides. 

Math: Students will be wrapping up their unit on Expressions next week. They did a great job this past week on some problem solving questions that involved working backwards. There will be a quiz next week followed by a TEST on Friday. Students will be given a review sheet on Monday, but already have access to it on Google Classroom. 

Music - Band: We moved into the band room for the first time since 22.5 months ago! We will continue to work through our method books - students will always have pages of music to practice and practice assignments on Google Classroom. 

Music - Choir: Music theory will continue soon - we missed music due to a snow day!

Music - Orchestra: We should have Bil’em Cabbage memorized! Cripple Creek and Old Joe Clark to be memorized this next week. Practice up! Fiddle up!

PE: 5th graders are applying the variety of jump rope skills that they have learned to a jump rope routine this week. 

Science: This week students learned about mixtures and solutions. They made their own mixtures and learned to identify the solutes, solvents, and the solutions.

Social Studies: Next week students will finish learning about the 1st colonies and prepare to take a test. Study guides are posted on Google Classroom.

6th Grade

Art: 6th graders will continue experimenting with watercolor painting with the goal of being completed with their 8 experiments by the end of class. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.

Bible: This week in Bible we wrapped up Paul’s 1st journey by learning about the fruit of the spirit, his letter to the Galatians, and taking a quiz. Romans 8:35, 37-39 is due Fri, Feb 11.

Language Arts: This week we took the LA MAP test. We also spent some time reading The Name Jar as part of our culture unit which will prepare us for World Fair. Next week, we will continue to learn more about culture and synthesize our learning by starting the writing process for our culture poems. 

Math: Students are wrapping up their unit on Expressions. We spent a few days this past week learning about the distributive property and combining like terms. There will be a TEST next Thursday. Students already have a hard copy of the review sheet, but one can also be found on google classroom. 

Music - Band: We moved into the band room for the first time since 22.5 months ago! We will continue to work through our method books - students will always have pages of music to practice and practice assignments on Google Classroom. 

Music - Choir: The Sound of Music! Drumming! Life is good….

Music - Orchestra: We should have Bil’em Cabbage memorized! Cripple Creek and Ash Grove to be memorized this next week. Practice up! Fiddle up!

PE: 6th graders are applying the variety of jump rope skills that they have learned to a jump rope routine this week. 

Science: This week students began to study the rock cycle, by using crayons! Each day their “sediments” take another step in the rock cycle, and students continue to learn more about it.

Social Studies: Next week students will take a test on culture. Study guides are posted on Google Classroom.

7th Grade

Art: 7th graders will work on drawing out their Lego self portraits on the final sheet of paper in preparation of painting. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.

Bible: In Bible we will be looking into the Bible; what it is trying to tell us, who wrote what, and the reasons why certain stories ended up in it. We will have Bible memory due on Thursday, Feb. 10. It is on Psalm 119:11-15

History: We completed our study of the Industrial Revolution with a test today. Monday we begin looking at what was going on in the South during the same period. 

Language Arts: We are continuing our study of Trouble. As we focus on the importance of dialogue in literature, we are also spending time dealing with biased language and slurs. What do we do when we encounter this language in literature? In real life? 

Math - 7th Math: We are taking our chapter 6 test on Tuesday on the topic of solving equations and inequalities. We will then pause for a mid course review, and then begin chapter 7 on the topic of geometric figures next week.

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are into Chapter 8! Students are beginning to see some new concepts in their assignments and getting more homework for after school. If your student is struggling with homework, I am available to help during Noon Room and after school.  We will have a check - in quiz in the middle of next week.

Music - Band: We moved into the band room for the first time since 22.5 months ago! We will continue to work through our method books - students will always have pages of music to practice and practice assignments on Google Classroom. 

Music - Choir: We are learning the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang…..VERY fun show. 

Music - Orchestra: We should have Bil’em Cabbage memorized! Ise the By and Swallowtail to be memorized this next week. Practice up! Fiddle up!

PE: 7th graders are applying the variety of jump rope skills that they have learned to a jump rope routine this week. 

Science: We have had some awesome discussions about what decisions we would have made about reintroducing wolves into Yellowstone back in 1994. We are now studying different biomes. We are looking at a test next week Wednesday. 

8th Grade

Art: 8th grade will be continuing the plastering of their family shape portraits. Students should be plastering about ½ way through the next class period. If your student needs to work on their cardboard cutting and assembling they should plan on working about lunch or before or after school on Monday and Tuesday. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.

Bible: We have completed our Last Battle unit with an amazing project that connects the Reformed Worldview to The Last Battle - - how we see the good, the stain of sin and the way things can be reformed and redeemed. Our next unit will be The Case for Faith - we will read the book and work our way through considering apologetics and how we can defend what we believe.

History: This week we began a brief look at the time of Reconstruction after the Civil War. In particular, we will look at some of the lingering effects that affected race relations in our country for decades to come.

Language Arts: We have finished reading The Giver! Over the next few days students will be viewing the 2014 film adaptation of the same name. We will be taking notes and having daily discussion (parents, refer to the email sent earlier). Students are learning about colons and semicolons. We will be gearing up to write a second memoir.

Math - Algebra: We are beginning a new chapter on exponential functions and sequence. We will start out the chapter by learning about the properties of exponents.

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are into Chapter 8! Students are beginning to see some new concepts in their assignments and getting more homework for after school. If your student is struggling with homework, I am available to help during Noon Room and after school. We will have a check - in quiz in the middle of next week.

Music - Band: We moved into the band room for the first time since 22.5 months ago! We will continue to work through our method books - students will always have pages of music to practice and practice assignments on Google Classroom.  

Music - Choir: The show is March 24/25. Check the schedule for rehearsal updates!

Music - Orchestra: We should have Bil’em Cabbage memorized! Ise the By and Kesh Jig to be memorized this next week. Practice up! Fiddle up!

PE: 8th graders have reviewed a variety of different jump rope skills and will be moving on to our basketball unit next week.

Science: We will be finishing up our light unit learning about color and how our eyes see. Part of this will be dissecting a sheep’s eye next week. Your children have heard this already and should be mentally preparing. ◡̈ Please reach out with any concerns. We will have a test Wed, Feb 16.
