General Announcements

Lego Robotics: Mr. Musch, Ms. Frens, and Mr. Kiser would like to invite 5th - 8th grade students to join us for a new after school club (Lego Robotics) starting up at the end of February. We love playing with Legos and we love technology - we know many of our students do too. Students will use the Mindstorm software to program the EV3 robot and complete various missions.

If your student would like to join us, please complete the Lego Robotics Sign-up form soon. We will meet in the Student Center on Feb 27, March 2, March 6, and March 9 from 3:00-4:30.

Fifth Grade:

Gospel Theatre plays will be next week Thur Feb 09 at 10:10am and Fri Feb 10 at 11:15am. Please join us in the commons if you can!

PLEASE make sure your child has appropriate outdoor clothing! 5th graders do have to go out for recess each day!


Art: We are working on creating Modigliani self-portraits in class. Next we will work on a Georges Seurat.  

Band: Something new - - practice records are now due signed by a parent each Thursday. Every student received a packet of practice records so they are all set for the rest of the year. 45 minutes per each week is the goal. Please help your student get into a regular practice routine. This will improve their learning and life discipline too!

Bible: Pilgrim’s Progress, Jesus Plays, Modern Day Parables, Miracle News Reports, Illustrating the Crosses… quite a bit going on in Bible right now.

Language Arts: We finished our Biography reports and wrote our speeches for wax museum. Please know that with the busyness of the plays next week, this is supposed to be very low key. A prop and/or hat is fine if you don’t want to do a complete costume. We will be performing for our classmates on Tuesday.

Math: The first fraction quiz went home yesterday. We will soon be multiplying and dividing fractions.

Orchestra: We are working on All for Strings page 26 #75,76,77 and 78. Be sure to learn all sections of St.Lawrence Overture and First Scale March.

Spanish: Loved the fashion shows! Next week we will prepare for our “Garage Sale” and practice bartering (which reviews numbers, as well.)

Sixth Grade:

Art: In art we will be completing the portrait project. 6th graders might have some project work to complete at home over the next week. Next up is our watercolor unit. Check the homework calendar for project due dates and homework.

Bible: We have many wonderful speakers joining us in the next few weeks to share about God’s love for diversity. 6K (with Mrs. Westrate) has a memory work quiz on Thursday.

History: GSW # 2 due on Thursday. Final Mesopotamia project and extra credit due on Friday. This week we start our study of world cultures as an introduction to World Fair.

Language Arts: We continue to finish up our persuasive paragraphs, learn about adverbs, and read short stories.

Math: We continue to study algebraic expressions. We will specifically study the distributive property and equivalent expressions. Tentatively we are planning to take a test on Chapter 6 at the end of the week.

Orchestra: Work on notes in Treasure Quest and Burst-get all notes perfectly in tune! Keep up the great work!

Science: We are studying ways that heat energy transfers in our atmosphere and also will begin investigating clouds.

Spanish: Students will prepare a “Fake Family Photo Album” to present. This will utilize family vocabulary, as well as other things learned this year. The premise: Each student has “visited” (a la exchange student) an Hispanic country and is telling us about the family with whom he/she stayed. More details will be posted on Moodle, along with all the resources needed to put together their descriptions.

Seventh Grade:

Algebra (7th): We will be continuing chapter 10 on factoring polynomials. Chapter 10 test will be on Monday 2/13.

Art: 7th graders are working to complete their positive and negative space unit with the completion their clay robot tiles. Next students will work with proportion in a fun self-portrait project. Check the homework calendar for project due dates and homework.

Bible Wanner: 7th graders are working on wrapping up learning about prayer and they will be transiting to learn with Mr. Huttenga.

Bible Huttenga: 7th graders are completing a series of letters of gratitude to people in their lives. They will soon transition to learn with Mr. Wanner

History: We will be reviewing our chapter on Africa preparing for a test at the end of the week.

Language Arts: 7th graders will soon be wrapping up the Westing Game simulation while simultaneously recording their adventures in journals - written in the voice of their assigned character. Once complete, we will read the novel to put together the missing pieces and discover the true answer to the Westing Game.

Math: We will be studying one-step and two-step inequalities.

Pre-Algebra: We will be solving multi-step equations with “rational coefficients.”

Orchestra: Be sure to bring in your permission slip for the February 16th practice at Christian High. We need it by Monday-Feb 6

Science: We will continue our study of Volcanoes and Earthquakes.

Spanish: 7th graders have a QUIZ on Wednesday covering Kitchen vocabulary and conjugating -AR ending verbs. We continue with our PenPal letter exchanges and are increasing our writing skills in Spanish!

Eighth Grade:

Lowell High School Class of 2021 Orientation Thur, Feb 09, 2017 Lowell Performing Arts Center 7:00–8:30pm Please enter on the West side of the building. This orientation is for parents and their children who will be entering high school in the fall of 2017.


Algebra: Next week Wednesday we will take a test on Chapter 7.

Art: 8th graders continue on the Frank Stella family shape portrait project. Cardboard construction is almost done and plastering starts next week Wednesday. Check the homework calendar for project due dates and homework.

Bible Huttenga: 8th graders are working in groups to adapt a specific mission of Paul into a screenplay, which will then be filmed.

Geometry: We will be finishing Chapter 8 with a test mid-week. Next we will be studying surface area and volume.

Language Arts: 8th graders will continue to read The Giver while also working on the long-term interdisciplinary project, “The Book of Memories”.

Pre-Algebra Enhanced: We will be subtracting and Factoring Linear Expressions.

Orchestra: Be sure to bring in your permission slip for the Feb 16th practice at Grand Rapids Christian High. We need it by Monday Feb 6!!!!!

Science: We will have a quiz over investigation 3 on Friday.

Spanish: We will finish up our skits and practice using stem-changing verbs that work well with our Breakfast unit.
