5th Grade
SEED Market: What a success! Thank you for all of your hard work that made SEED Market possible. Students raised over $2,000. We will give you a final total after Christmas break.
Art: After break 5th graders will spend time glazing their multi-pinch pot vessels and their coil pots.
Bible: This week we began the Jesus Project. This project will be worked on for the remainder of the year and is a great keepsake! To begin, we looked at the different names of Jesus and common misconceptions about the birth of Jesus. Students also wrapped up their Justice Verses this week - check your child’s binder for a gold slip of paper with his/her final score.
History: This week we took a test on the Age of Exploration. After break, we will begin our unit on the first colonies.
Language Arts: This week we continued to read Home of the Brave and make connections to the other Global Awareness texts. We also had fun creating projects to practice and memorize some common prepositions! After Christmas, we will start BOB (Bring on the Books)!
Math: We wrapped up learning how to multiply with decimals. When we return from break we will focus on how to divide with decimals.
Music - Band: What great festive Christmas Videos came in- - share some music with grandparents and family and have a very Merry Christmas!
Music - Choir: Hooray for Carol projects! Good King and Silent Night….soo nice.
Music - Orchestra: Have an amazing break! Be sure to pick up your instrument and practice a few times! December practice record due Jan 04.

Science: Students are now able to use words like solute, solvent, solution, and dissolve properly. We will continue working with these words and concepts after break.
6th Grade

Art: 6th grade students will continue working their emotion monster for 1 more class to work on these creations. With this project students will also be working on creating an artist statement describing their artwork and the meaning behind it. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible: This week in Bible we wrapped up our Advent unit by writing a letter to spread God’s light to those around us. Students made an origami box with a candle inside to deliver to someone who could use a reminder of God’s light in this world.
History: This week we took a test on ancient Mesopotamia. After break, we will begin studying ancient Egypt.
Language Arts: This week we continued reading Fish in a Tree and practiced the parts of speech. After Christmas, we will start a unit analyzing short stories.
Math: Students have been working on graphing by making pictures on a coordinate plane. When we return from break we will focus on integers and then transition into expressions.

Science: We have been studying air pressure and will dive into a study of temperature, density and more complex weather factors after break.
7th Grade
Art: 7th grade students are now working on painting their organism signs. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible: In Bible students finished creating their devotional entries for their devotional book. We will begin looking at sermons after Christmas Break.
History: Students and I had SO much fun this week with a simulation about the distribution and development of natural resources! Our week was all about gaining foundational knowledge about natural resources, experiencing their role in the world in action, and reflecting on what our simulation taught us about how natural resources shape societies, countries, and lives. I decided not to quiz the seventh graders on terms this week, but they will have a geography test on African countries and landforms after Christmas break. We’ll take some time next week to prepare for it as a class.
Language Arts: We will be comparing and contrasting characters like Ebenezer Scrooge and Kit Tyler and discussing how conflict brought about change in their lives.
Math - 7th Math: We started our new unit on expressions this week. When students come back from break we will look at like terms and how to add and subtract expressions and inequalities.
Math - Algebra: We have learned about the 3 different methods of solving systems of equations. When we get back after break, we will spend time reviewing and practicing the different methods and learning how to graph systems of inequalities.
Math - Pre-Algebra: We completed Chapter 6 right before Christmas break. When we come back, we will do an “Algebra Boot Camp” and then jump into our Chapter 7 which is the first chapter of new material for the year.

Science: We are switching gears and moving into populations and ecosystems after break. We are going to spend much time learning about and loving on our fish.
8th Grade
Art: 8th grade students are taking a pause from the Frank Stella inspired family shape project to work on glazing their ceramic pots. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible Huttenga: We will resume our study of The Last Battle. We will finish the book not long after our return, and students will begin working on two projects related to our discussions and observations as we read.
Bible Sloterbeek: This week, we learned a bit about what the Bible is and reflected on Lee Strobel’s arguments in The Case for Christ about the reliability of the Bible and additional evidence for the stories we find there - particularly in the New Testament. After Christmas break, we’ll be focusing on gaining and practicing some skills that help us make our Bible reading more meaningful.
History: This week was all about reviewing the basic content that we covered regarding the interactions between Native Americans and Europeans on the American continents. Students took a test on Thursday of this week. After Christmas break, we’ll pick up with our timeline project on this era of history and, when we finish, begin moving into a study of English Colonies in North America.
Language Arts: We will dissect the ending of The Giver, and continue revising for NHD.
Math - Algebra: When we come back we will be learning about linear systems.
Math - Geometry: We will continue to learn about relationships within triangles. It’s really cool to see all the different relationships there are within a triangle and what you can do with them!
Math - Pre-Algebra: We spent a great week together working on a project where each student was given a family to adopt for Christmas. They applied their knowledge of percents, discounts, and taxes to work within a very specific budget. We also learned about percent of change by comparing popular toys from the 1980’s to the price of them today.

Music - Choir: We are beginning to work on our show(s). SO glad we get to do this. More info to come later via email as we figure out the best possible scenarios.

Science: We are moving into light waves. For this we use light boxes and are able to really analyze the way that light moves and the properties of a light wave.
Athletics

All boys basketball practices and games are cancelled through Dec 20 due to the order from the MDHHS. Please watch for more information in the upcoming weeks about any potential future plans about the season.
