Advent Walk
5th Grade
Art: 6th graders will be working on creating/making their emotion monster of the emotion that they struggle with out of wallpaper after Christmas break. 6th graders also have a sketchbook due after christmas break. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible: This week we wrapped up our Advent unit by sharing our Advent collages. Please note that the next Bible memory is a parent choice assignment , Please read through the assignment and have your child’s verse picked out by no later than Tues, Jan 04. This verse will tentatively be due Jan 20.
Language Arts: This week we finished learning about the plot elements of short stories. After Christmas break, we will continue the second part of our short story unit.
Math: We have just finished learning about integers and the coordinate plane. After break we will continue our studies on Expressions.
Music - Orchestra: Begin working on your fiddle tunes! Merry Christmas!
PE: We are finishing up with some fun games in PE prior to Christmas break.
Social Studies: After break, students will continue learning about ancient Egypt.

7th Grade
Art: 7th graders continued to work on painting their sculptures this week in class. After Christmas break 7th graders will transition to the last step of this sculpture project by incorporating painted lines on the sculpture. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible: We spent this past week looking at different themes of Advent and how they can be applied to our lives. When we return from break we will begin looking at sermons.
History: We finished up our time on Westward Expansion. After Christmas Break we’ll start learning about the Industrial Revolution and how it changed the North.
Language Arts: Please ask your 7th grader about Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol and all the sights, joys, and horrors that Scrooge was shown to change his heart. You can also ask them how his treatment of the poor relates to “The Danger of a Single Story” Ted Talk we viewed and discussed in class. When we return, we will jump back into writing conventions, begin prepping for the next MAP test, and start laying the groundwork for our next novel study.
Math - 7th Math: We are close to being done with our chapter on expressions. Students have been learning some basics of Algebra as they simplify expressions with variables. We will have one more lesson and then some days to review before taking a test in the week after break.
Math - Algebra: We have learned the foundations of systems of equations and will be reviewing them at the end of the week.
Math - Pre-Algebra: We just finished our final project on percents. When we return from break we will begin learning some concepts on the Algebra side of things with chapter 7 on Expressions.

Science: This week we went out to Ada Lake to test the water quality and see if it is somewhere our fish could live. The answer was no.. ask your children why!
8th Grade
Art: 8th graders have put some great thought and meaning into the various shapes that describe the character of their family members. Students will now work on creating their shapes out of cardboard and assemble together with tape and glue to create 1 family “painting”. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates.
Bible: We have been reading The Last Battle through the lens of a reformed worldview. Students are noticing what is good, what is broken, what is being transformed, and what connections to the protestant reformation are apparent.
History: We concluded our study of the political developments reflecting the divisions that led to the Civil War. Students made podcasts discussing the issues and submitted the podcasts Friday. After Christmas Break we study the Civil War.
Language Arts: Thank you very much for taking the time to look at your 8th grader’s writing for NHD. When we return, we will spend about 2 weeks finalizing the project. In the meantime, we will return to writing conventions and continue to study The Giver and begin to delve into the central themes of the literature we study this year - the importance of the choices we make as individuals in the face of society.
Math - Algebra: We finished a chapter on writing linear expressions this week. When we return from break, we will do some cumulative review on the topics covered so far this year, before beginning a chapter on solving systems of linear equations.
Math - Geometry: We are learning about different types of relationships that happen within triangles. This is something that we will continue after break as well.
Math - Pre-Algebra: We just finished our final project on percents. When we return from break we will begin learning some concepts on the Algebra side of things with chapter 7 on Expressions.

Science: We finished up learning just the basics of waves. Next, we will be diving into sound waves and how we hear.
Athletics
Thank you to all the boys basketball teams for a great season! Congrats to our 7th grade team finishing league runner-up. Please have your son turn in his jersey to either Mr. Meyaard or the office.
