Water Wizards

The Lego League Tournament was based on 3 areas:
1. Robot challenges that involved designing and coding an eV3 Mindstorms robot.
2. Presenting a project based on the theme
3. Pepresenting core values (discovery, fun, impact, inclusion, innovation and teamwork).
The Water Wizards competed against over 20 teams from the area and as far away as Benton Harbor. The ACS team members impressed the judges with their dedication to problem solving in the challenges and their passion for learning more about how to maintain clean water.

Coach Ray Jorgensen also won the Coaches' Award for his dedication, creativity and overall stellar representation of the Lego League core values.

Fifth Grade:
5th Christmas Party: On Fri, Dec 20, fifth graders will be having a Christmas Taco Party for lunch. Check out the sign-up sheet for what to bring! We will also be having a white elephant gift exchange. We ask that each student kindly bring a wrapped gift. No need to buy one, regifting is strongly encouraged! It should be about 10 dollars in value.
Auction: Christmas auction is Fri Dec 20. If you have any items that need a new home we would gladly take them! Please deliver donations to your child’s 5th grade homeroom teacher.
Water Donations: Water donations are due this Mon, Dec 16. The money will be donated to build wells around the world.
Art: 5R started working with clay this week to create coil pots, while 5G and 5S are working to complete the printmaking project.
Bible: This week we finished creating country newspapers and began presentations.
History: We have begun learning about the 1st colonies!
Language Arts: We are reading Home of the Brave in class. This is a beautiful story about a Sudanese refugee who resettles in America. Here, he is faced with the new and different hardships and challenges of life in a different culture. On Monday, students will take the preliminary Spelling Bee test. If your child desires to study, have him/her work on the 5th and 6th grade word lists (passed out in class).
Math: We finished our chapter on adding and subtracting decimals earlier this week. We are starting a new chapter on multiplying and dividing decimals. Ask your 5th grader about the pre-test!
Music - Band: December practice records are due when we get back to school.
Music - Choir: We are getting ready to attend a Grand Rapids Symphony concert on Feb 27. SO COOL. More details later. We are also singing! (of course!)
Science: We finished our Plant Systems unit and will be having a test next week Tuesday. Our next unit is about animal and human systems!
Sixth Grade:
Culvers: Students are looking forward to singing at Hope Network next Friday and eating lunch at Culver’s. Please have your child turn in the permission slip, menu, and money on Mon, Dec 16 to the homeroom teacher.
Art: 6th grade students continue to work on portrait drawing and learning about Picasso. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
Bible: This week we began an advent unit. Students are creating collages with pictures that represent ways in which they see God’s light in the world. Romans 8: 35, 37-39 is due Tues Dec 17 and the Bible memory illustration is due Thurs Dec 19.
History: This week we learned about the Babylonian Empire. Students explored Hammurabi’s code of laws and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
Language Arts: We need your help! On Wednesday, the 6th graders will have Disability Awareness Day. Do you have any wheelchairs that we could borrow for the day?

Math: We are continuing to learn about integers and the coordinate plane. This week we have focused on absolute value, natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers. We will continue to look at common fractions and their decimals.
Music - Band: Such a GREAT concert - yay you! We are SO ready for our new books. Yay band!!!! :)
Music - Choir: We are going to start a unit on the Sound of Music after the break. Yay!
Science: We are getting hands on next week by building circuits and electromagnets.
Seventh Grade:
Art: 7th graders have an X-acto practice cutting paper due on Mon, Dec 16. In class students are working on transferring their sign drawings to the sign board. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
History: We will be finishing our study of world religions next week as we get introduced to the beginnings of Islam. Next week we will also take the Geography Bee quiz in our class (it’s not graded) to determine who will go on and compete in the school Geography Bee after Christmas break.
Math - Algebra: We have a test with two parts- one part on Monday, one part on Tuesday.
Math - Pre Algebra: We are finishing our chapter on ratios, rates, and proportions. A chapter test is scheduled for Thursday morning.
Music - Band/Choir: Great concert - Yay you! :) Way to go! December practice records are due in January when we get back.
Science: We have looked into Boyle’s and Charles’ Gas Laws this week and will continue with looking into properties of solids and liquids next week.
Eighth Grade:

Parents of Ada Christian 8th Graders you are invited to an 8th grade scheduling meeting with the Grand Rapids Christian High School Academic Advisors
Please join us on Thur, Jan 09 at 6:30pm at Ada Christian to learn about the exciting things happening at Grand Rapids Christian High School. Academic advisors from Grand Rapids Christian High School will meet with parents and students to provide valuable information about the Grand Rapids Christian High School curriculum, graduation requirements, and freshman courses.

Even if you are not sure which high school your child will be attending next year, we encourage you to attend this event and complete all of the scheduling forms. There is no cost to complete the paperwork and it does not serve as a commitment to enroll, by attending however, you will have the very best chance of getting the courses your student selects for their freshman year at GRCHS.

Art: 8th graders started their unit on artist Frank Stella and creating unique self portraits. Part 1 of the blue Frank Stella packet is due on Mon, Dec 16. Consider talking with your students about what shapes he/she is considering to use represent you and different family members. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.
BibleVN: We are working on a parable/miracle project where we will teach parables and miracles to each other and also to other students at ACS.
History: Tuesday we will be having a test on chapter 7 and the U.S. Constitution. We have been reviewing in class and students have a review sheet and flashcards on moodle to help with review. Next week Wednesday we will take the Geography Bee quiz in our class (it’s not graded) to determine who will go on and compete in the school Geography Bee after Christmas break.
Math - Algebra: We have a test with two parts- one part on Monday, one part on Tuesday.
Math - Pre Algebra: Next week we will be finishing up chapter 5 with the hope of taking a test on Thursday.

Science: We are analyzing the different aspects of sound waves. Students enjoyed watching the Ruben’s tube. Ask them to explain why it works! We will have a test on sound waves next week Thursday.
