Middle School Matters – Dec 11, 2015

General Announcements:

Middle School Christmas Concert - Tuesday, Dec 15, 7:00pm at ACS.

  • Call time is 6:20 for Orchestra, 6:30 for everyone else.
  • Concert Dress - White on top, Black on the bottom, must meet ACS dress code.

Grade Level Announcements

General Announcements:

Fifth Grade:

Art: Next week in class we will complete the building of our coil pots.  

Band:  Full band Monday and Thursday - no band on Tuesday. Keep working on O Come, O Come, Emmanuel and the book - page 15 and 16. We are making strides!

Bible: Next week we will look at the lineage of Jesus, from Abraham on, and also study the announcements of Christ’s birth to Zechariah and Mary. After Christmas we will dive into the Jesus Project!

Language Arts: We worked this week on outlines for our biography report. Next week we will be working on the written report.

Math: The test on decimals came home yesterday. We will take a little break next week and look at patterns in lists and in graphs. After Christmas it will be all about fractions!  

Orchestra: Full orchestra Monday and Thursday-no orchestra on Tuesday. Practice pages 24 and 25 this week in All for Strings. Focus on counting and correct entrances on numbers 68 and 69 and be sure that you know the note names and finger positions for the notes on these 2 pages.

PE: We will wrap up our basketball unit next week.

Science: We are creating posters that illustrate the groundwater cycle.  

Social Studies: Lewis & Clark, Sacagawea and the Westward Expansion.

Spanish:  Garage sale, the cultural art of bartering, and other clothing activities continue!

Sixth Grade:

Art: 6th graders will continue working on drawing a portrait of themselves as an Egyptian. There will be a portrait drawing quiz next week. Make sure to study the green sheet.

Band:  Tuesday night is our concert - call time is 6:30pm. Students should arrive dressed in white and black.

Bible:  Bible Memory - Philippians 2:1-8 due on Wednesday. Bible Cube project will be introduced next week Monday or Tuesday. Students will have work-time in class this week, and a 2 days after Christmas vacation to complete the project. It will be due Friday, Jan 08.

History:  We are continuing our study of Mesopotamia this week.

Language Arts:  Why books make ideal Christmas presents:

  1. They never need winding or batteries.
  2. They’re lighter than fruitcake.
  3. You can read them first and nobody will know.
  4. They can’t spoil or melt.
  5. They won’t clash with your favorite shirt.
  6. They work in all temperatures.
  7. They never go out of style.
  8. They’re easy to wrap.
  9. They move at the same pace as your eyes.

We will continue to read and learn about short stories and capitalization next week. In addition we will play some Christmas word games! Have a blessed Christmas!

Math: Students will be taking their test on Integers this coming Tuesday. We will spend the remainder of the week studying the coordinate plane and distance.

PE: We will finish our basketball unit next week with a test on the rules of the game. A review sheet is posted on Moodle.

Orchestra: This coming Tuesday, Dec 15 is our Middle School Christmas concert. All string players report to the orchestra room by 6:20pm to tune, warm-up and be seated on stage. Concert dress with black shoes and stockings also. Plan to have your instrument at school on Monday for tuning!  Just a reminder that extra strings are vital to have in your cases before concerts.  

Science: Students have completed a test on the Periodic Table. We will continue to learn about atoms, elements, and bonding this week.

Spanish: What do Mr. Potato Head and Christmas Carols have in common? They can be enjoyed in Spanish! 6th graders will have a grand time reviewing past vocabulary with Potato Head Races, and we will also learn a couple Spanish Christmas carols next week.

Seventh Grade:

Algebra (7th):  Next week Tuesday we have a quiz on chapter 6 and next week Friday we have the chapter 6 test.

Art: In this coming week the 7th graders will begin working on a non-traditional self portrait.  Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook due dates and project due dates.  

Band: Tuesday night is our concert - call time is 6:30pm. Students should arrive dressed in white and black.  

Bible: Jonah storytelling is due on Tuesday.

History: We have begun a new unit studying Africa. Next Thursday we will take a map quiz on identifying 30 countries in Africa. We are practicing in class each day and there are resources on moodle. Next week Thursday we will also take the grade level Geography Bee Quiz to see who will represent our grade in the school Geography Bee.  

Language Arts: Seventh graders will have their quiz on The Westing Game Monday, Dec 14. We will be concluding the final school week of 2015 with A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. We will talk about the dangers of apathy and the joys of generosity: what does it mean to “observe Christmas all the year”?

PE: We will finish our basketball unit next week with a test on the rules of the game. A review sheet is posted on Moodle.

Pre-Algebra (Kiser): Studying percents and chapter 6. Have your child calculate the tip the next time you go out for dinner.

Pre-Algebra (Holtrop): Students will have a test this coming Wednesday on chapter 5.

Orchestra: Middle School Concert – Tuesday, Dec 15. Be in the orchestra room at 6:20pm to tune/warm-up. Give your parents a mini-concert this week. Concert dress is required for all.

Science: We presently are studying ants and will move into the study of butterflies.

Spanish:  Memory verse (posted on Moodle in both written and audio form) on TUESDAY (Dec 15) for all 7th grade classes.

Eighth Grade:

DESSERT THEATRE:  A complete schedule for January-March will be posted this evening.  Please note that the schedule is based on the “Perfect World” and is subject to change, though every effort will be made to keep that to a minimum.  Website link:  http://acsdesserttheatre.weebly.com/


Algebra (Witte): We will still be working through Chapter 6 next week learning how to solve inequalities.

Algebra (8th): We are working on writing linear equations.

Art: 8th graders are working on the family shape project this week.  Students should have the family shapes built and taped together by the end of their 2nd class this week.  Please check the homework calendar for project due dates and sketchbook assignments.  

Band:  Tuesday night is our concert - call time is 6:30pm. Students should arrive dressed in white and black.

Bible:  We will be finishing our study of the book: The Case for Christ.  Our final project will be given when we finish the chapters, and will be due the week after Christmas Break.

Geometry: We will be studying triangles and how to prove triangles are congruent.

History: Next week we will learn about the War of 1812 and wrap up Chapter 6. A final assignment for Chapter 6 will be due at the end of the week. Next week Thursday we will also take the grade level Geography Bee Quiz to see who will represent our grade in the school Geography Bee.  

Language Arts: 8th graders will be reading one final short story: The Mustache by Robert Cormier. They will be introduced to the Book of Memories project. Final drafts of NHD are due on Friday, Dec 18.

Orchestra: Middle School Christmas Concert is this coming Tuesday, Dec 15. All string players need to be in the orchestra room at 6:20pm to tune and warm-up. We are looking forward to playing for you!

Science: We will study “weather and climate in the news” this week, following our unit on weather and water. Planetary Science is up next.

Spanish:  Students will finish up their memory verses and put together a “Christmas Around the World” presentation so we can all learn more about how different Hispanic countries celebrate Christmas differently, (or the same!) as we do.

Athletics:

5/6 Basketball: The 5th and 6th grade basketball season is off to a great start!

7/8 Basketball: The 7th and 8th grade pre-season tournament will be on Saturday, Jan 09 with the regular season starting the week of Jan 11.  Game schedules for 7th and 8th grade will most likely be released late during Christmas break.  When that happens we will get you the information as soon as possible.
