5th Grade

Rice Week (Nov. 15-19): We need your help! If you are willing to help out with Rice Week, please sign-up on this Google Doc. This letter contains more information.

Art: In class this week we learned about the transfer process and many students started transferring their drawn design onto the block to be cut. Next week we learn about the tools used to cut a relief print and experiment with cutting. 

Bible: This week we wrapped up our Pentateuch unit with a quiz. Students also turned in their Pentateuch Books. Next week we will begin our Global Awareness Unit. This week they participated in a “Silent Feast.” Students were given an identity from a different country, and based on if their country was developed, developing, or underdeveloped, students received a different amount of food. Throughout the month of November we will be learning about Biblical justice and become more globally aware citizens. Please read this letter for more information about exciting events to come!

Language Arts: This week we finished our Survival Interviews for our independent reading books! We also discussed the plot and themes of Hatchet. Towards the end of the week, we started the writing process for descriptive paragraphs about our time at Survival Camp. Next week, we will continue to wrap up our Hatchet novel study and continue to practice descriptive writing!

Math: This week we continued practicing division with a one-digit divisor. We interpreted remainders with a team game this past Wednesday! Students have been working on their cross number (due next week Thursday) and there is a TEST next week Tuesday. 

Music - Band: The practice assignments are all on Google Classroom. Students just hit submit when they are done! We are working on lots of songs in our books.

Music - Choir: We are working on a project that connects to the story of the song It is Well With My Soul. It’s possible that your child might like to create a model of old Chicago and then videotape it burning - - this is only allowed with parent permission - and a parent must take a starring role in their video (I am Fred’s mom, and I approve this video). :) The Great Chicago Fire took place in October of 1871. The man who wrote the lyrics to It is Well lost property in the fire. The whole story is on their Google Classroom.

Music - Orchestra: The October practice record is due on Monday, Nov 01. Keep working on the book- Christmas music to come soon!

Science: Students spent time this week learning about the interaction of the Sun, Earth, and Moon! Students have used flashlights, small globes, and even their own movement to engage in these concepts!

Social Studies: Students learned about the people of the Desert Southwest, including the Pueblo, the Navajo, and the Apache. Next week they will investigate how different groups of Native Americans were affected by their environment, focusing on the Pacific Northwest.

Spanish: We are working on a class project called “Nouns and Articles”  This project helps students learn that all nouns in Spanish have gender and number. The articles that modify them must reflect the same gender and number. Students will be taking pictures of nature with their ipad and using WordReference.com to help them. This project will be done in class and not at home (unless a student is absent). See Google Classroom for more information.

6th Grade

Art: In class today we transitioned to working on part 2 of the portrait project. In this portrait we are creating a not so traditional portrait. Please make sure to check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates. 

Bible: This week students gathered evidence about how Jesus was loving and a servant. Students put these character traits into practice by writing encouraging notes and serving outside.

Language Arts: This week we finished reading Tuck Everlasting. The sixth graders had very mixed feelings about the end of the story; be sure to ask your students their opinions! Next week we will begin our characterization writing project for the novel. 

Math: Students have been practicing multiplying fractions. Next week they will be focusing on dividing fractions with a test the following week.

Music - Choir: We have been singing and working on Music Theory. 

Music - Orchestra: A google video was due on Thurs, Oct 28. Please make sure that this is turned in if not already. Christmas music is here! Practice practice!

Science: We are enjoying watching our small chicks grow each and every day! Along with our chicks, students are digging deep into learning about weather. This week we started on an in-class project on Extreme Weather.

Social Studies: We began our unit on ancient Mesopotamia by exploring the geography and mapping the land. We also participated in a simulation this week! Students learned the importance of farming.

Spanish: Student took a test today (Friday the 29th).  We start a new unit next week.

7th Grade

Art: In class this week students worked on develop very spontaneous idea/concept for their sculpture, laid out their idea on their foam block and began craving/sculpting their foam block. In this project students will have to work with their mistake, take creative risk and learn to respond in the moment to their creativity. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates. 

Bible: Seventh graders will be wrapping up their unit on Prayer. Next week we will review what we have learned during this unit and then they will begin on a final project where they will explore their top five characteristics of prayer. This Project will be due Mon, Nov 08. Next Bible Memory is Psalm 119:103-106 due Thurs, Nov 11.

History: We’ve been learning about the often-forgotten War of 1812. Next week we conclude the unit with a test on Friday.

Language Arts: This week students will continue their study of The Witch of Blackbird Pond and work together in Reading Groups. They are doing an excellent job at probing for specificity in their discussions! Students will also be given some individualized writing conventions goals to practice, and will work on implementing said conventions into some informal class writing. 

Math - 7th Math: We are working through our chapter on percentages, learning to identify ways that we use percentages in our everyday lives, and becoming familiar with manipulating percentages in real world situations. We have a test scheduled for next Tuesday.

Math - Algebra: We will continue to learn about linear equations and how to graph them. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are finishing Chapter 4 on Exponents and Roots. We will spend some time reviewing this week and then will have a test on Thurs, Nov 04.

Music - Band: The practice assignments are all on Google Classroom. We are working our solos - regular practice should continue! Here are great books available to order from Meyer Music.

Music - Choir: Erie Canal projects are now due next week Fri, Nov 05.

Music - Orchestra: A google video was due on Thurs, Oct 28. Please make sure that this is turned in if not already. Keep practicing for Solo and Ensemble (Nov 16) and filling out your practice guide that is due as well.

Science: Students received their study guide for our atoms and periodic table test upcoming on Thursday. We are wrapping up by learning about the families on the periodic table.

8th Grade

Northpointe Preview Day (Nov 11): You are invited to experience a day as an NPC mustang! Shadow a high school student for the day!  Parents are invited to stay for their own Preview morning. Butter Braid Sale: Our Butter Braid fundraiser sale for the 8th grade class trip goes through Nov 04. The Butter Braids will be delivered to school in time for students to pass them out at Thanksgiving (just in case you were hoping to sell them to out-of-town family). 

Yearbook Pictures and Baby Pictures: Please read the details below.

Yearbook Pictures 

  • 8th graders may submit a different image for the yearbook than the traditional school photograph.
  • It should be a portrait image (vertical, not horizontal).
  • The image should mostly be a "head and shoulders" or "waist up" shot.
  • Please no pets
  • If a digital file...300 dpi or more, image size should be equivalent to a 8 x 10, the image file size should be between 2 MB and 10 MB
  • Please send the images to Dani Buchanan ()
  • Due date: Dec 01, 2021

"Baby Pictures" for Yearbook and Graduation

  • Each student needs to submit one "Baby Picture" that we can use for both the yearbook and at graduation.
  • You may submit either a digital image or an actual photo. (The picture will be returned quickly and safely.)
  • The "baby picture" can be from the time your student was a baby or up to a young child. 
  • These pictures can be fun, sweet, cute, and all of that! 
  • Please send the images to Dani Buchanan (dbuchanan@adachristian.org) or have your student drop off the photo to Miss Buchanan in the office.

Art: 8th graders have started building their ceramic slab pots and walls are going up quite well. Talk to your 8th grader about what their plan for their vessel and what they are thinking about for how they will be incorporating texture into their design. Encourage your students to be learning and reviewing the ceramic terms as we will be using these terms as we work through this ceramic’s unit. The terms to learn are posted on the art google classroom. There will be a quiz on the ceramic terms after we are done building our vessels. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook assignments due dates. 

Bible VanNoord: This week we started our unit on The Case for Christ. Lee Strobel set out to prove that Jesus was not who Christians say he is….and instead Strobel became a Christian.

Bible Schaefer: This week we started our unit on The Case for Christ. Students have been learning from the testimony of Lee Strobel and grappling with questions surrounding how they can articulate their faith. 

History: We have ended our study of the Industrial Revolution with a look at the effects on society. The test is Wednesday.

Language Arts: The students are doing great work with the NHD project, and many are beginning to draft outlines for their essay. We will have essays outlined by the end of the trimester. Students will continue to study The Giver in their reading groups. Students will also be given some individualized writing conventions goals to practice, and will work on implementing said conventions into some informal class writing.

Math - Algebra: We are wrapping up our chapter on Solving Linear Inequalities and will be reviewing for a test coming on Tuesday.

Math - Geometry: We are learning about transformations! 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are finishing Chapter 4 on Exponents and Roots. We will spend some time reviewing this week and then will have a test on Mon, Nov 8.

Music - Band: A video was due today for Marching to Pretoria. Next up is a video for Triumphant Festival. Festival is Nov 16. Here is a link to great books available to order from Meyer Music.

Music - Choir: The musical was revealed TODAY. Books may go home on Monday to those who have our Dessert Theatre Letter signed by a parent. Whew. It’s been hard to keep this secret!!!

Music - Orchestra: A google video was due on Thursday, October 28. Please make sure that this is turned in if not already. Keep practicing for Solo and Ensemble (Nov 16).

Science: Students received their study guide for our moon test early this week. Our test will be next Thursday. We are finishing our study of the moon by looking at the features on the moon and how those might have formed.

Athletics

It came down to ACS blue v. ACS white in the finals! Our two 5/6 soccer teams finished 1st and 2nd in the GRACEAC postseason tournament last night! Go Wildcats!

Today is the deadline to sign up for 5-8 ACS Boys Basketball sign-ups. The season is scheduled to run from Oct 25-Christmas Break.
