From the Library

Ada Christian School is helping to support student reading by offering a Follett Book Fair from Wed, Oct 13 to Tue, Oct 19. Every purchase made will benefit our school library. 

There are two great ways to shop our book fair and everyone is welcome to participate! When you participate you can purchase books for your child, yourself, school or help build classroom libraries.

  • In person shopping: feel free to stop by the school library and walk away with an armful of books. If you choose to shop in person, masks are strongly encouraged. The Book Fair is open:
    • Weekdays Oct 13-19 from  7:30 - 3:30
    • Sat, Oct 16 from 8:30-11:30 (Pure Play)
    • Mon & Tue Oct 18 & 19 from  4:00-7:00 (Parent Teacher Conferences)
  • Online shopping: If you would like to shop for a student and support the school from the comfort of your home, feel free to use the code ZVY51 when you visit our online companion fair. All book orders will be shipped to the school after the book fair is finished.

Teachers will have classroom wish lists at the fair as well as online. Thank you for your support of the ACS library via the Book Fair!

5th Grade

Fundraiser: In order to reduce the cost of Spring Camp for everyone we are hoping to raise $5,000. Please encourage your child to collect cans and turn the money into the front office by Oct 19. If everyone raises $100, we will have reached our goal!

Art: 5th graders have started the printmaking unit. This is a long unit as students will work through designing, transferring, cutting, test printing, final printing in many colors and mounting the best prints. Have a conversation with your student about what insect or fish their are thinking about create a design with. Each student needs to develop 3 ideas. 

Bible: This week in Bible we finished up the story of Joseph and moved into the book of Exodus. The 10 Commandments must be memorized by Oct 19. If your child is behind in his/her Pentateuch Book they should work on it over the weekend.

Language Arts: This week we took a spelling test, continued to read Hatchet, and focused on making connections as a reading comprehension strategy. Next week we will continue to read more of Hatchet and focus on the elements of plot. Students should have their independent Survival book read by Fri, Oct 15. Their “Survival Interview” on Google Classroom is due on Wed, Oct 27.

Math: We wrapped up our unit multiplying whole numbers this past week. We are going to start learning how to divide by one-digit divisors now. Look for a quiz late next week. PLEASE NOTE: all quizzes can be retaken during noon-room if an adult has gone over and signed the first quiz. 

Music - Band: We have our first video due next week - a song from page 9, to be handed in via Google Classroom. We also have a practice assignment on Google Classroom as well.

Music - Choir: We have been working hard on reading music, understanding clefs and notes and lines and spaces. And, we have been singing songs about Standing on God’s Promises, and The Roses of Success.

Music - Orchestra: In orchestra we have added the bow! Keep practicing in your book through page 17, and make sure that you have turned in your signed September Practice Record.

PE: This week we started doing some fitness testing in PE class and completed the mile run! Students will be starting up our football unit next week along with completing other small fitness tests. 

Science: This week, students finished their Introduction to Science unit, and began their Earth and Sun unit by looking at shadows! We will have a test on Monday to close our last unit. The notes and review sheet are on Google Classroom. 

Social Studies: We wrapped up our geography unit with a test. For our next unit of study, students will investigate the diverse culture of the first inhabitants of the North American continent.

Spanish:  This week we are learning new vocabulary for our next class story.  Students have worked on their picture dictionaries and participated in vocabulary building activities.  Next week we will act out our class story and prepare for a quiz.  QUIZ: 5S - Oct 15, 5R/5G - Oct 18.

6th Grade

Art: 6th grade students are continuing their work on the portrait project. Next week we hope to transition to part 2 of this project. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates. 

Bible: This week in Bible we have been working at the archaeology site - digging up ancient artifacts, model Israeli homes, deer remains, and clay pots. Students have been putting into practice math skills as they measure, scale, and plot each artifact on his/her top plan.

Language Arts: This week we took a spelling test, continued to read Tuck Everlasting, and brainstormed ideas for a language arts related art project for Mr. Wanner! Next week we will continue to read Tuck Everlasting and dive deeper into analyzing characters. 

Math: We are starting to wrap up our unit on Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. There will be a test next week Thursday. A review sheet has been posted to google classroom and students will be receiving a hard copy on Monday. 

Music - Band: We have our first video due next week, to be handed in via Google Classroom. We also have a practice assignment on Google Classroom as well.

Music - Choir: We have been working hard on reading music, understanding clefs and notes and lines and spaces. And, we have been singing songs about Standing on God’s Promises.

Music - Orchestra: In orchestra, we have been working through our book and also playing Alison’s Waltz and DragonHunter. Work on those three things in your practice time.

Science: This week, students finished their Introduction to Science unit, and began their Weather unit by looking at how hot and cold interact! We will have a test on Monday to close our last unit. The notes and review sheet are on Google Classroom. 

Today our chick embryos are 10 days old! We look forward to our chicks hatching in the next week and a half! Check out our chick cam to keep an eye on our coming chicks!

Social Studies: Our geography test was moved to Tuesday, Oct 12. Students can use their study guides, notebook, and worksheets to prepare for the test. Study guides were passed out in class and posted on Google Classroom.

Spanish: Students created class stories and performed them last week.  This week they are doing activities that reinforce the vocabulary and structures found in the story. One of these activities is called “Blind Retell.”  Students retell the story to a partner by only looking at a picture of the story. Next week there will be a listening and reading assessment along with a QUIZ on Oct 17.

7th Grade

Art: 7th graders are warping up the texture painting project and there are some wonderful masterpieces. Next week Thursday, Oct 13 these texture paintings will be turned in for grading. Next week we will begin a sculpting unit with learning about the British artist Henry Moore. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates. 

Bible: We are continuing with prayer. This week we will be looking into some of the specific examples as to why people pray in the Bible and how we can move those examples into our own lives

History: We completed our study of the launching of the US (Washington and Adams) and have a test on Monday. Then we’ll start a study of the Jefferson era.

Language Arts: 7th graders have a longer memoir due on Wednesday, Oct 13. We will also begin our first novel study of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and an introduction to sentence usages and common errors to avoid. 

Math - 7th Math: In 7th Math, we are still working through our chapter on Rates and Proportional Reasoning (it’s a long chapter!) Students can anticipate a test Friday of next week.

Math - Algebra: In Algebra we will continue to learn about inequalities. There will be a quiz on Wednesday and we will wrap up the week learning about compound inequalities and absolute value inequalities. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: Pre-Algebra students will be starting Chapter 4 on exponents and their rules. This will involve quite a bit of memorization. This chapter we will slow down a bit so that students have time to grasp all of the concepts

Music - Band: We have our first video due next week - This Train, to be handed in via Google Classroom. We also have a practice assignment on Google Classroom as well, and a song packet was handed out for our upcoming Solo performance in Nov.

Music - Choir: We have been working hard on music theory, including key signatures, advanced musical concepts, etc. And, we have been singing songs about Standing on God’s Promises.

Music - Orchestra: In orchestra, we have been working through Swallowtail Jig, Ridgepoint, and Ash Grove. Work on those three things in your practice time.

OE: 7th grade OE is off to a good start and we are enjoying the great weather.  Since OE is a new format and a graded class for 7th graders, I wanted to give an introduction and overview.  See attached. Additionally, an announcement about volunteering to help with invasive species removal with students is also attached.

PE: This week we started doing some fitness testing in PE class and completed the mile run! Students will soon be setting goals and working to improve their fitness levels throughout the school year.

Science: We took our first science test this past week. I am hoping to have that back to students early next week. We started defining particles as atoms and are about to dive into what atoms are made of and how the periodic table helps us learn about atoms. 

Spanish: On Monday, each class performed a story act.  This story was about Mario and Luigi, with Luigi stealing all of Mario’s girlfriends (Peach, Daisy…) The next class we compared and contrasted our class stories using Venn Diagrams outside.  There will be a QUIZ Oct. 18

8th Grade

Yearbook Pictures and Baby Pictures: Please read the details below.

Yearbook Pictures 

  • 8th graders may submit a different image for the yearbook than the traditional school photograph.
  • It should be a portrait image (vertical, not horizontal).
  • The image should mostly be a "head and shoulders" or "waist up" shot.
  • Please no pets
  • If a digital file...300 dpi or more, image size should be equivalent to a 8 x 10, the image file size should be between 2 MB and 10 MB
  • Please send the images to Dani Buchanan ()
  • Due date: Dec 01, 2021

"Baby Pictures" for Yearbook and Graduation

  • Each student needs to submit one "Baby Picture" that we can use for both the yearbook and at graduation.
  • You may submit either a digital image or an actual photo. (The picture will be returned quickly and safely.)
  • The "baby picture" can be from the time your student was a baby or up to a young child. 
  • These pictures can be fun, sweet, cute, and all of that! 
  • Please send the images to Dani Buchanan (dbuchanan@adachristian.org) or have your student drop off the photo to Miss Buchanan in the office.

Art: 8th graders finished the initial printmaking project this week and will be starting to plan for the ceramic clay box project next week in class. Please have a conversation with your 8th grader about what shape, theme and possibly themed lid they're thinking about for their vessel. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates.  

Bible VanNoord: We are finishing the book of Matthew, we have had some Bible memorization, learned about the Seven Woes in Matthew 23, the Matthew 18 Principle, watched a little bit of The Chosen, and talked a lot about what Jesus was like.

History: We concluded this week with a test over the First Presidents. Next week we begin studying the Industrial Revolution and the growth of the Cotton South and learn how the two areas drifted so far apart they ended up fighting a civil war.

Language Arts: We are getting closer to being able to shift to starting our NHD outlines. Students will be researching less in class and begin to focus on our novel study of The Giver as well as a unit on sentence structure and the parts of speech. 

Math - Algebra: We are finishing up our chapter on Solving Linear equations. Friday and Monday we will be reviewing for our test on Tuesday. Encourage your child to keep up their efforts and attitudes for Algebra as we continue into challenging topics.

Math - Geometry: In Geometry, there will be a test on Tuesday about Reasoning and Proofs. It’s important for students to study their notes and know them well. This is just the introduction to proofs and their comfort will grow! Midweek we will begin Chapter 3 and learn all that we can about parallel and perpendicular lines! (Who knew a whole chapter could be spent on those two concepts?)

Music - Band: We had a special guest from the US Marine Band “The President’s Own” this week via Google Meet. She joined our class on Thursday to talk about how music is her career and how she serves our country as a professional musician.

Music - Choir: Students will learn a little about music/VR and imagine other ways that music is used in 2021.

Music - Orchestra: Great job at the Foundation Dinner. Next week in orchestra we are going to start working on our Solo and Ensemble Pieces.

Science: We are learning about the phases and motion of the moon. We have done a number of labs to help us understand how the phases of the moon work. Next week we will look into why we can see the moon and the sun at the same time.

Spanish: Last week students began a new unit with an emphasis on sports.  This week students are building their vocabulary and creating group stories to share with their classmates.

5-8 ACS Boys Basketball sign-ups are now open, sign-up deadline is Friday, Oct 15. Click here to sign up. The season is scheduled to run from Oct 25-Christmas Break.
