Middle School Matters

General Announcements

Dates:

ACS Spirit Week, 5-8th grade: May 17-21. 

This week, show you school spirit by participating in each of the day’s themes. The order of the days will be published on Moodle, but will include: Crazy Day, Hawaiian Shirt day, Team Spirit (jersey’s etc) Multiples Day (dress the same as as many friends as you can), and Faith Strong Friday.

May 17 - 56 Band/Orchestra Concerts (more details coming)

5th Grade: arrival 5:45 pm, Concert 6:00-6:30pm, 
6th Grade: arrival 6:45 pm, Concert 7:00-7:30pm
Band in the South Gym, Orchestra in the North Gym
What to wear 56: ACS Working for the Lord T-shirts on top, khakis or dark pants/skirts/shorts on the bottom, minimum fingertip length. 
Each student may have up to 6 total guests for the concert. Guests will be seated in pods of 6.

May 19 - 78 Band/Orchestra Concerts - 

7th Grade: arrival 5:45 pm, Concert 6:00-6:30pm
8th Grade: arrival 6:45 pm, Concert 7:00-7:30pm
Band in the South Gym, Orchestra in the North Gym
What to wear 78: White on top, black on the bottom, pop of color is ok - bright shoes or scarf or tie. :) Minimum fingertip length. 
Each student may have up to 6 total guests for the concert. Guests will be seated in pods of 6.

May 21 - 78 Spring Service Day

5th Grade

Spring Camp: Please make sure you have May 26-28 marked on your calendars for camp. More details regarding camp and chaperones will be sent out closer to camp.

Gospel Theatre:  Gospel Theatre and the End of Year Celebration are taking place June 4, 1:30-3:00pm in the North Gym. Please complete this survey so we can know how many people to plan for. You should complete the survey for each parent attending.

Auction: The end of year auction is June 9. We are looking for donations - these can be used items from around the house that you no longer want or need (sports balls, Nerf hoops, purses, stuffed animals, etc). If you wish to donate items to our auction, please send your child with the items to give to his/her homeroom teacher. 

Art: 5th grade is continuing their work on their Wayne Thiebaud inspired cake pictures and in next week's class we will be working on adding color to the shadows, plates, and tables. 

Bible: This week in Bible we practiced for Gospel Theatre and students began studying the book of John and we continued to look into the Biblical connections of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Please see information above about Gospel Theatre and complete the survey.

History: The fifth-graders wrapped up their Revolutionary War unit with a test. Next week they will begin learning about the formation of a new government.

Language Arts: This week we continued reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We practiced summarizing and describing characters. We also enjoyed watching our biography speeches! The videos added to our Flipgrid Wax Museum were very impressive!

Math: We finished taking math MAP tests this past week. We will be having a test next week Thursday on Chapter 12. Students can find a review sheet on google classroom and will be receiving a hard copy on Monday. 

Music - Band: Our concert is next Monday - see above for details! 

Music - Choir: Much singing and drumming this week!

PE: We have just finished up Ultimate frisbee. We will be doing some fitness testing, including our mile run next week. 

Science: We’re wrapping up our study of plants and pollinators in the next week with a project and an open-resource quiz assignment in class.

6th Grade

6th Grade Class Trip: We are excited to return to Camp Roger on Thu June 3 for our 6th Grade Class Trip. A paper letter, permission slip and Camp Roger release form went home with students on Wednesday. Please complete and return the permission slip and release form along with $10 (cash or check to Ada Christian School) to your child’s homeroom teacher by Fri May 21.

Auction Donations: 6th Graders have earned and saved MANY auction points this year. Our End-of-Year auction will take place on June 9 and we are looking for donations. These donations can be gently-used items from around the house that you no longer want/need (stickers, sports balls, Nerf hoops, purses, stuffed animals, etc), individually-wrapped candy or snacks or new items that you think 6th graders would be excited about. If you wish to donate items, please send them in with your student and let your child’s homeroom teacher know to expect them. Thank you in advance!

Additional Request - For an exciting end of year opportunity, Mrs. Westrate is accepting donations of: paper plates (just need a few), ketchup, mustard, whipped cream (cans or tubs), mayo, ranch dressing, pudding (any flavor), hershey’s syrup, colored sprinkles, and pickles/relish/pickle juice. If you have these at home or are willing to purchase some extra for our 6th graders, that would be great! The more we have, the more interesting and exciting our experience will be. *Please note: the expiration date is not important as these products will not be consumed.

Art: 6th grade student will continue the glazing of their animal pots that they started this week. Please check the homework calendar for project due dates and sketchbook homework.

Bible: This week we continued to read Pilgrim’s Progress. Psalm 8:5-9 is due May 27.

History: This week we learned about the decline and fall of ancient Rome. Next week, Wed, May 19, students will take a test on ancient Rome. 

Language Arts: This week we began reading The Wednesday Wars. Before starting, we learned about life in the 1960’s to better understand the setting of the novel. We also finished hosting our World Fair nights! Many students showed me pictures of the amazing cultural dishes they made for their families. I hope you enjoyed exploring the sixth graders’ websites!

Math: We finished our math MAP tests this past week. Next week we will be completing graphs and get started on probability.

Music - Choir: We have been presenting our projects and finishing our Sound of Music unit!

PE: We have just finished up Ultimate frisbee. We will be doing some fitness testing, including our mile run next week. 

Science: We’re beginning a study of bacteria this week. Students will design an investigation that will provide data to support and improve our Got Yolk? business as well as digging into other interesting questions.

7th Grade

Art: 7th graders will work to wrap up their collage project next week and move into a drawing unit. Please check the homework calendar for project due dates and sketchbook homework.

Bible: We are continuing on the Paradise walk of Jesus. We are taking our time outside to enjoy the beautiful weather!  We will wrap up this project with a reflective paper and journaling - this will be in the next couple of weeks

History: We continue our project on being colonists. Students have built their colonist persona and made their packing lists for the journey and for their home in the New World. Next week we make the voyage and start learning about life in the colonies. 

Language Arts: We will wrap up The Westing Game, and then focus our attention solely on the ProCon project. Parents, please participate in a conversation-assignment with your child this weekend. 

Math - 7th Math: We began a new unit on probability this week. Students can expect a quiz on Monday over lessons 9.1 to 9.5. 

Math - Algebra: We will continue to learn about radical functions and equations. Our very last chapter! We will also begin reviewing everything we covered this year. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We have finished our final round of MAPS testing! Students did awesome! We are getting into our unit on Transformations and Angle line relationships. This unit is vocabulary heavy and so students are encouraged to look through a quizlet linked on Moodle to help prepare for the test which will take place Thurs, May 20.

Music - Band: Our concert is next Wed - wear white/black - see top of page for details!

Music - Choir: Leitmotifs, change ringing, listening to the story of Phillis Wheatley as portrayed by Nkeiru Okoye.

Science: We continue to look at the atomic level of matter and why certain elements are “attracted to” others. We are studying the various types of bonds made in chemical reactions.

Device Intention Form: We need all parents to complete the Device Intention Form by May 28 indicating if your family would like to purchase your student’s device or return it to ACS. 


Art: 8th graders need to make sure their street art project photo and reflection is complete TODAY, May 14 - assignments turn-in is available on the Art Google Classroom. In class next week 8th grade students will be using their knowledge they gained about graphite pencils, shading/blending, and sighting to work to draw part of a still life. Please check the homework calendar for project due dates and sketchbook homework.

Bible: We will continue delivering, listening to, and reflecting on our Plumb-bob speeches. The Bible “exam” is due on May 25.

History: We finish up our study of the Civil War with student-led presentations on four significant battles. Students also should have begun working on the exam review (available in print and on Google Classroom).  

Language Arts: We will be wrapping up Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy and continue to prepare for the exam. The 8th graders are doing a great job studying! They now have access to all the material they will need to study, which can be found on our Google Classroom page. 

Math - Algebra: Next week we will finish up chapter 9 and move into exam review. Continue to encourage your child to review early and often- a really great way is to retake tests and check their answers with their corrected test. 

Math - Geometry: We will continue to learn about area and perimeter. There will be a test on Wednesday and then we will spend time reviewing for the exam. Students have received a couple review packets and an overview of what will be on the exam. Reading over notes, studying properties and reviewing tests will be a great help! 

Math - Pre-Algebra: Next week we will finish our short unit on probability and statistics. Although we have been reviewing for our upcoming exam a little bit each week, we will have a much more focused exam review beginning late next week.  

Music - Band: Concert next Wed - exams were due this past week. We are excited to play for you!

Music - Choir: Fiddler projects were presented this week. The Graduation Song was also practiced.

PE: We will be playing some of the student’s favorite games over the next few weeks to conclude the school year.

Science: We have moved into looking at Punnett Squares and analyzing how they help us understand the given trait of a person.

Athletics

Our last weekly COVID testing will take place next Mon, May 17 as all spring sports teams will finish their season by Sat, May 22. 

All 5-8 graders must have a Physical Examination Form completed before they can participate in sports for the 2021-2022 school year. This physical examination should be completed on or after Apr 15, 2021 to valid for next school year.
