Thursday, May 12 - Middle School Spring Concert: We are so excited to be able to have our Spring Concert coming up this week for all 5th-8th grade students. Here are a couple of details that you will need to know before the big night.

What to wear
56: Theme T Shirt and khakis, or dark slacks/skirts
78: White on the Top, Black on the bottom (no blue jeans), with a pop of color.

Time

Walk-a-thon

Our annual spring Walk-a-thon is coming on Fri, May 13, with the new twist of a color fun run for middle school! Check out our volunteer signup to help put on this fun event! 

Envelopes are due back by Wed, May 11. We have a fundraising goal of $25,000, which we can reach if each student gathers $50 in donations.

Don’t care to write checks for each of your kids? Give online! Online donations will be split equally among siblings listed. 

Check out the great prizes students can earn:

  • The top-earning middle school homeroom will get to douse their teacher in color powder.
  • The grade with the most school spirit will earn a popcorn party.
  • Classes with 100% participation in collecting donations will earn an ice cream party.
  • The top fundraiser from each grade earns a $20 gift card.
  • For every $50 brought in, students will have their name entered in a drawing for the top prize of a Big Joe Imperial Lounger bean bag chair. (Thank you, Jung family!)

PTO-Sponsored Events: Christmas Gift Shop, Daddy-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son Event, Staff and Bus Driver Appreciation.

PTO-Sponsored Programs: Staff funds, middle school class funds, elementary class funds (room parents), preschool funds, Covenant Care funds, yearbooks, 3rd grade Bibles, 4th grade zoo school, 5th grade camp, spelling/geography bees, field trip funds, media center support, music boosters, curriculum enhancement, and Moms in Prayer. Also, any extra funds enable us to grant teacher wish list items!

Music Camp: Summer is coming and our musicians are amazing. They might really enjoy attending Knollcrest Music Camp at Calvin University. So many great offerings! Take a look - ask Mrs. VN if you have any questions, she has worked at KMC for more than 30 years. 

5th Grade

Spring Camp: Save the date! Camp is May 25-27. The cost of camp will be $60. More details to come.

Art: 5th graders will be working on adding color with oil pastel to their slice of cake drawing which have been inspired by Wayne Thiebaud. Additionally, Summer Art Camp 2022 sign ups are happening now. All sorts of creativity and new art projects will happen on August 1 - 5 from 12:45 - 3:00. Bible: This week we took the Language MAP test. We also, began our Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe study and found out our Gospel Theatre parts! Matthew 6:19-21, 24 is due May 19.

Language Arts: This week we started reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We have been studying exposition, unfamiliar words, tone, and point of view while we read. As a reminder, students need to turn in their biography speech videos on Flipgrid by Wed, May 11.

Math: Math MAP testing will take place next week Tuesday and Wednesday (10th and 11th). After MAP testing we will be continuing our study of Geometry. There will be a test the following week.

Music - Orchestra: Our spring concert is 6 days away! Please arrive at 5:45 for our 6:00 concert. Wear your school Theme T-shirts and khakis or black pants/skirts.

PE: 5th graders have been working on the keys to throwing a frisbee, they will be applying this to the game setting of ultimate frisbee next week. 

Social Studies: This week we discussed the roles and experiences of women and slaves during the American Revolution and began our American Revolution biography projects. Projects are due Tues, May 10.

Spanish: Reading our novel, “LLama en Lima” and learning about Peruvian culture along the way!  Final Quiz coming before Spring Camp.

6th Grade

Art: 6th graders are working on building their chicken bowls and more work on these ceramic pieces will happen next week. Students should continue to work on learning the 16 ceramic quiz. Additionally, Summer Art Camp 2022 sign ups are happening now. All sorts of creativity and new art projects will happen on Aug 1-5 from 12:45 - 3:00. Bible: This week we began Pilgrim’s Progress, an allegory about our journey as Christians. Psalm 8:1-4 is due Thurs, May 12.

Language Arts: This week we took the LA MAP test, and had a blast eating some many tasty foods from all around the world during our World Fair parties! Students created scavenger hunt questions for their websites, and first place winners won prizes. We had so much extra food that the sixth graders even shared with the fifth graders! Thank you all for your help in making our feast so special! Next week we will start our novel study on The Wednesday Wars. 

Math: Math MAP testing will take place next week Tuesday and Wednesday (10th and 11th). We will be continuing to learn about statistical measures and the graphs that can be made with the data.

Social Studies: This week we explored how Ancient Rome transitioned from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire, and looked at the rule of some famous Roman Emperors. We are currently studying the life of Jesus and the spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire.

Spanish: Students just took a test over the first half of our novel. We will continue reading our novel this coming week.  

7th Grade

Art: 7th grade continue to work on their wooden assemblage sculpture. Students will move on to glue together their projects next week and also consider the many meanings of color as they select a color to spray paint their sculpture boxes. Additionally, Summer Art Camp 2022 sign ups are happening now. All sorts of creativity and new art projects will happen on Aug 1-5 from 12:45 - 3:00. Bible: We are working through our journey of the life and ministry of Jesus. Students are spending time outside and reflecting on what his life means to us .

History: We finished up our study of the Civil War this week–the largest unit of the year! Students did a great job! Next week we will take the MAP reading test, then begin our last unit of the year–Reconstruction. 

Language Arts: This week we will be wrapping up our ProCon research-writing project, and we will continue reading The Westing Game. 

Math - 7th Math: This week in 7th math we have been continuing our study of probability. Students have learned about simple, compound, theoretical, and experimental  probability. We will have a test on Wednesday.

Math - Algebra: We will continue to study data analysis and displays and will tentatively have a test on Friday. We are also starting to review for our final exam. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: Pre-algebra students are wrapping up a small unit on angles and shape angle measurements. We will begin shape transformations after a short quiz on Tuesday.

PE: 7th graders will be working on their frisbee and teamwork skills through ultimate frisbee next week. 

Science: We raised 110 Chinook Salmon and were able to release them this past Wednesday. It was a beautiful day and a fun time out at the river!

Spanish: Students just took a quiz over the first half of their novel. We will continue reading and learning about Spain as we read.

8th Grade

Art: 8th grade students have started their street art unit learning about street art and the artists that create this art. 8th graders have their milestone painting projects due May 11. Please check the homework calendar for project and sketchbook due dates. 

Bible: Students are wrapping up writing and practicing their plumb-bob speeches, and are preparing for speech presentations next week. 

History: We finished up our study of WWII. Next week we will take the MAP reading test and then begin a short project on the Civil Rights Era. We’ll also be working on exam review.  

Language Arts: We are in our final unit of the year: a study of Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy. While we study our final novel, we will also be doing daily preparation for the Language Arts exam.

Math - Algebra: We are working to learn the rules for simplifying radicals as we continue with our final chapter on solving quadratic equations. We are also in the middle of exam review, and have MAP testing starting on Friday.

Math - Geometry: We will continue to learn more about perimeter, area and volume. We are also preparing for our final exam.

PE: 8th graders will continue working on their frisbee and teamwork skills through ultimate frisbee next week. 

Science: This week we started learning about how your DNA makes you look the way that you do. Next week we will be looking at the plants we grew in OE and making similar observations to Gregor Mendel. 

Spanish: We continue to read our novel and learn about Spain as we go. There will be a TEST over the novel May 17 and 18.
