5th Grade

Welcome Baby Reidsma:

Introducing Judah Dale Reidsma! He made his arrival last Friday. All praise and thanks to our God for our little man. Thank you for your prayers!

Art: Next week 5th graders start a new project in art class learning about Wayne Thiebaud. 

Bible: This week we began reviewing the life of Jesus by utilizing our outdoor spaces. Matthew 5:43-45 is due Fri, Apr 29.

Language Arts: This week we began drafting our biography speeches! Next week, we will revise and edit our speeches. After we have completed our final drafts, we will learn some skills on how to deliver a speech, and a parent letter will go out about the final project. The final project will involve your student to create a video at home. Stay tuned for more details!

Math: We are wrapping up our chapter on multiplying and dividing fractions with a test next week Tuesday (April 26). Students have a review sheet that can be found in the back of their notes packet - one can also be found on google classroom. 

Music - Band: Our concert will be May 12 at ACS - 6:00-6:45pm. Wear Standing on the Promises shirts on top, khakis on the bottom or black on the bottom. We are working on a LOT of songs for this!

Music - Choir: We will be singing at the spring concert and also on GF day; we are working on our songs.

Music - Orchestra: Next week we will be having Ingrid Dykeman come in to our classroom and show us ELECTRIC instruments! It’s going to be a lot of fun! An April Google Video is due on Thursday. Also the practice record is due at the end of the month.

PE: Students are working on their striking skills in a variety of baseball/softball style games. A reminder that students should be bringing some type of indoor tennis shoes to PE class.

Science: Students dug into an investigation about what activates yeast! There were several tests performed including cookies, boiling the yeast, flour, and sugar!

Social Studies: Students finished their poster projects comparing the soldiers of the American Revolution and began talking about some of the major battles.

6th Grade

Welcome Baby Reidsma:

Art: 6th graders are working on a ceramics project. Students must complete the Chicken Bowl sheet before building their ceramic design. 6th graders should also be studying for their ceramic terms quiz. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates. 

Bible: This week we continued our Psalm study. Psalm 23 is due Fri, Apr 29.

Language Arts: This week we continued to design pages for our World Fair websites. We also spent time revising and editing the rough drafts of our websites, but most students will need to continue to check and make changes to their websites this weekend. A final draft of your child’s website must be ready at the beginning of class on Mon, Apr 25 so that we can prepare final steps for Fine Arts Night. Earlier this week, a parent letter went out on the details of our final World Fair presentations, so please refer back to it if you have any questions. In addition, we will have a World Fair Class Party on May 5 at school. If your child would like to bring a cultural dish or snack to share, please use the sign up sheet. We are so excited to wrap things up and share our final products with the ACS community!

Math: This week we have done some review from topics covered earlier in the year. We have also started learning how to use formulas to find the volume of rectangular prisms and triangular prisms. Next week we will begin learning how to find the surface area of prisms and pyramids. There will be a text next week Friday (Apr 29). 

Music - Band: We are working on a lot of music - it’s fun to hear them learn learn LEARN! They have another video due soon - on Google Classroom - we will move the date for this into May due to a lot of schedule changes this past week.

Music - Choir: We will be singing at the spring concert and also on GF day! See the note in the calendar at the top of MSM for attire information.

Science: Students dove deeper into force and motion by learning how to calculate net force, and what effect friction and acceleration have on net force.

Social Studies: Students have been preparing for their roles for an exciting Ancient Rome mock trial activity happening at the end of this week. They also had a map quiz on Ancient Rome.

7th Grade

Art: 7th graders have started work on their Louise Nevelson box assemblage sculpture using wood piece that were going to be thrown away. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates. 

Bible: We are finishing up our unit on Leadership. Students will give small group presentations on Monday. We will then begin our final unit on the life of Jesus and what he has done for us.

History: We continue our study of the Civil War. Next week we look at the battle of Gettysburg, the Gettysburg Address, and the end of the war. The test will be the week after next, likely Wed, May 4.

Math - 7th Math: This week in 7th math, students have been using the skills they learned about measuring figures to design and build their own cardboard cities. Next week we will begin a unit on probability.

Math - Algebra: We will be wrapping up chapter 9 early next week. It’s a chapter full of new concepts, so it’s important to study and review! The test will be Tuesday. We will then begin Chapter 11 and study data analysis and displays. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are working through our unit on Statistics and Probability. We will have a test on Friday, Apr 29.

Music - Band/Choir: Our concert will be on May 12 from 7:00-7:45pm. Students should wear white and black for this event. The band just had a wonderful field trip to perform for a church. A great time (and a wonderful lunch) was had by all!!

Science: We have been learning about trophic levels and how much energy is transferred between each feeding relationship. Next week we will be looking into decomposers. 

8th Grade

Art: 8th graders continue their work on their milestone painting project. Please check the homework calendar for sketchbook and project due dates. 

Bible: This week students have been working in their “zone” to finish the visual component of the plumb-bob project. They have memorized their verses and will begin brainstorming and composing their plumb-bob speech next week.

History: We have started our study of World War II, investigating the rise of totalitarianism and aggression and how it led to war as well as the attack on Pearl Harbor that brought the US into the war. Next week we’ll study the progress of the war in Europe and in the Pacific. 

Math - Algebra: This week students have been learning about all things probability - the counting principle, theoretical and experimental probability, stem and whisker plots, scatter plots, etc. We will review and test next week Monday and Tuesday, and begin our final unit on solving quadratic equations next week.

Math - Geometry: We will be wrapping up Chapter 9 about circles early in the week. We will begin our next unit and learn about circumference, area and volume. 

Math - Pre-Algebra: We are working through our unit on Statistics and Probability. We will have a test on Friday, Apr 29.

Music - Band: Our band exam is due May 5. Check in with your band student to see how they are doing on this video assignment. 

Music - Choir: We will be singing at graduation. Wow! (Interjection)
