A Note From The Principal
Peek-a-boo

Our 8th graders have a few more months with us. Some have been here their entire lives, while others have been here for a shorter time. At times, we might mention to them that the younger students are watching them, watching their behavior, listening to their words and noticing how they interact with each other. Whether 8th graders like it or not, they are looked up to by their younger peers. In a sense, each younger student is playing peek-a-boo with our older students.
Let’s take it one step further.
God watches over us and protects us, but He also sees what is inside us, our heart, our thoughts - who we are in Him.
That feels a little scary/daunting knowing how I can think at times, some of the things I say and some of the things I do.
How is it that a goat peeking out an opening can conjure up so many thoughts/questions?
Can it be that if we are paying attention, God can use anything and anyone to teach me a lesson?

Mighty Sequoia Redwood at Ada Christian
Just outside the middle school wing stands one of 53 “Memorial Trees” planted at Ada Christian. This beautiful Dawn Sequoia Redwood (Metsosequoia Sybototrosis) could live to be over 2000 years old and grow over 200 feet. This species of Sequoia Redwoods was thought to be extinct but in 1941 some were found in a remote area of China. Seeds were sent to Botanical Gardens in the United States and voila we have one on our property.
It's actually indigenous to Michigan but one hasn’t grown here in a really long time. Like Michigan’s Tamarack (American Larch) it is one of a few needle bearing trees that turns a beautiful golden brown in the fall and loses it’s needles. If you check it out in the next couple weeks, don’t worry, it’s not dying.

All the “53 Memorial Trees” have unique natures, especially suited for habitats and purposes. Part of God’s magnificent “Creative Design”. The oxygen giving lungs of God’s Kingdom. Mr. Sportel uses many of these trees in his outdoor Science classes.
They also have a human story. Take time to read the little memorial plaque by each of them. Most are in memory of someone dearly loved.
*Little Jacob Daniel (son of longtime music teacher Maria VandenBosch)
*8 year old Joel Marsmen whose spirit will never be forgotten
*Long time teacher Edna Koetje
In 2005 the first memorial tree was planted. It was in memory of Cheryl Hoogstrate, my wife, who passed suddenly in November of 2004. It was 8’ tall at the time and is now over 40’ tall and stands between the Woodshed and Hoophouse. It has been my daily reminder of Cheryl AND the eternal life (2000 years and beyond) that we’re promised in a beautiful Kingdom we can only imagine. Whispers and reminders of it are throughout our Outdoor Ed Kingdom. In the trees and in ”Every Square Inch”.
