SCHOOL ATHLETIC POLICY

A.  SCHOOL POLICY FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM PRACTICE OR GAME

1.  As a member of a team you are responsible to be at every practice and game.

2.  An UNEXCUSED ABSENCE is determined when an athlete skips with NO valid excuse.

3. DISCIPLINE for unexcused absences: results in the non-participation in the next scheduled game. If a second unexcused absence occurs during the season, the athlete is dismissed from the team.

B.  SCHOOL POLICY FOR SICK DAY(S)

1.  If a student is sick, the student must attend his/her afternoon classes in order to participate in practice or a game.

2.  If a student is at school in the morning but goes home sick in the afternoon, the student will not be

allowed to participate in that day’s event(s).

C.  SCHOOL POLICY FOR DOUBLE HEADER GAMES

1.  All student athletes are to remain on campus until after the contest.  Team members waiting are encouraged to sit and cheer the team playing.

2.  DISCIPLINE: Any student athlete caught off campus when s/he should be on campus will sit out the next scheduled contest.

D.  SCHOOL POLICY FOR TRYOUTS

1.  Ada’s philosophy is to allow maximum student participation.  However, if the numbers are sufficient,

two equally skilled teams will be formed at the seventh grade level and there will be no cuts. If the numbers are large for an 8th grade team, ‘cuts’ will be made.

2.   We are aware that “CUTS” has a certain meaning attached to it, and can increase the stress for the athlete.  We will do all we can to support and encourage your son or daughter.

E. SAFETY REMINDERS FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS

1.  Make sure you have a ride home arranged BEFORE attending a game at Ada or another school.

2.  Stay inside the building or at least next to the building, if possible, until your ride arrives.

3.  Parents, please try to be on time so that athletes do not have to wait in the dark.

4. AFTER SCHOOL POLICY:  For the protection of students, all students not participating in an after school function, such as athletics, must go home immediately after school is dismissed.  The school does not provide supervision for students not participating in the sport. If students wish to watch a game (not a practice), or are participating in an after school sport event, they must either stay at school (and watch the game) or go home and come back with a parent to watch the game. LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS, AND THEN COMING BACK TO SCHOOL WITHOUT THE COMPANY OF AN ADULT, IS NOT PERMITTED.

F.  PRACTICES AND GAMES

1.  The 8th grade teams shall have no more than four meetings a week, this includes contests. Generally these days are Mon/Tues/ Thur./Fri.

2.  The 7th grade teams shall have no more than three meetings a week, this includes contests. Generally these days are Mon/Wed/Fri.

3.  Practices are generally from 3:00 – 4:30, or 4:30 – 6:00.

4.  Games: 3:45 or 4:00 is the starting time for most contests.

G.  STUDENT  ATHLETIC  ELIGIBILITY

Student athletes must maintain an academic standard that meets or exceeds the expectations for the

students’ teachers and parents. If the level falls below an acceptable level of effort, the teacher will               notify the Athletic Director, and a parent contact will be made. Failure to improve efforts in the                       classroom in an agreed upon time frame will result in a temporary or permanent suspension from the           team.

1.  We will deal with each situation individually.

2.  If a teacher has a concern about grades or behavior of a student who is involved in interscholastic sports

that teacher will notify the Athletic Director and the Middle School Coordinator by email.

3.  By the end of the school the following day, the Athletic Director, Middle School Coordinator, and teacher          will have met to access the situation and determine if the DRASTIC STEP will be taken on that day, or if

a different procedure will be taken.

4.   The DRASTIC STEP: The Athletic Director, Middle School Coordinator, teacher, and student will look at

the problem and determine a course of action, as well as a time table which includes immediate                      measurable improvement. Parents and coach will be notified by the Athletic Director.

5.   If the course of action is not followed, the student will be removed from the team for the rest of the                   season. Improvements will allow the student to participate in the next sports season.

***  Student athletes may only experience the DRASTIC STEP once during the school year. Maintaining                grades and behavior are mandatory to stay eligible to participate in athletics.
