Professional Biography:

I graduated from Unity Christian High School in 2000 and also from Calvin College in 2004 with a B.A. degree in Art Education.  I am currently enrolled in a graduate program at Calvin College and am taking classes towards my Master's in Education. I have taught the visual arts since 2004 with four of those years being at ACS and two years prior with Grand Rapids Public schools.

Personal Biography:

I am married to Leslie Wanner and we live in southeast Grand Rapids.  We have no children, but do have a Boston Terrier named Roxie.  My wife and I are artsy people and enjoy any art related activity from visiting museums and art workshops, to home remodeling and landscaping.  We also both enjoy the outdoors and nature.

Faith Statement:

In and through having a relationship with Christ, I am able to understand that Christian education is a faithful response to God’s calling to nurture and train His children.  As a result I believe Christian educators, working with parents and the church, must first seek to create in each student a redeemed perspective – shaping how a student understands the arts and the world based on their faith in God.  Second, along with parents and the church, educators must strive to teach each student the knowledge and skills needed to grow, learn, and succeed in the world God created.

I have a passion for the visual arts and this passion is a great gift from the original artist/creator – God.  In my work as a visual arts teacher all that I practice and teach to my students centers around the truth of the scriptures and that God was the first and most amazing artist who has given each of us some gift of creativity.  Additionally, it is my desire to show and to share with my students the creative works of God that are all around us.  As a result, as we explore and learn through the various methods of art creation (e.g. drawing, painting, sculpture), I hope students will begin to see that the visual arts convey the truth of life and God’s world by exercising their creativity.  Finally, it is my goal that the lessons and projects I prepare and teach to the students will encourage them to explore and find the areas of art that resonate with their unique abilities which ultimately could be used to further the kingdom of God.
